Really hate to be that blunt, but its all I can say to describe it, its like a whirring noise, its not effecting the engine so I was thinking either alternator bearings or water pump bearings? preferably the first, anyone got any ideas?

cheers,

james

OK, remove the alternator belt. Then start the engine. The ignition light will stay on, but for the purposes of this experiment, that won't matter.

If the noise is still there, its not the alternator bearings, ergo if the noise has gone, it is.

Could be the tensioner. When was the belt last changed.

Cheers

D

It seems to have quietened now, quite strange really, thats twice the cinq has fixed itself, will let you know if theres any change, cheers for your help

might be that bearing in your clutch my 899cc does it when the clutch is up it makes a weird sound till i put the clutch down and it disapears, some days its loud others u can hardly hear it. but im just gonna run my engine to the ground as its getting a transplant soon anyways

Mines had the same whining since i bought it a couple of months ago, I thought it was something in the gearbox it gradually got worse until doing 95 down the motorway the other day it went crunch and the battery light came on, that'll be the alternator bearings then! so yeah i'd suggest disconnecting the belt and starting it up too, or you can just wait to find out like i did.
Anyone know a good place for cheap alternators?
