I haven't heard it from the outside, nor can I hear it with the windows down driving past a wall or fence.
Technical Noise like a grinding brake, but it's not and I haven't got a clue!

no it's not got worse, it appeared about 8k ago and still sounds roughly the same
Ive been meaning to check the gearbox oil. But as there are no oil patches I figure its okay. And besides, the garage left the driveshaft seal out when repairing my company van and that gearbox got real noisey, real quickly! This is just an annoying whine lol.

still not got to the bottom of this, buuuuuuuut.......
6th now whines when freewheeling. Safe to say my M32 gearbox can go on the list of failed ones. Anyone know any decent specialists in the northwest who are good and cheap for this?

Did you get to the bottom pf this noise you were explaining. My tjet 150 just started making this noise. I also thought it would be the diff since if you are in neutral it still makes the noise.

I never got to the bottom of it.
looking at the date of the post, I drove that car for another 3 years and it didn't get worse. I sold the car with 100k on the clock in 2016 and never took the box off, changed the box oil or messed with it.
Thank you so much for the response. I will be changing my gearbox oil next week, which oil did you use?

I never changed the oil. I was running the box until it blew basically. I managed to get a lot of miles on it without it getting worse.
Thanks for that. Such a shame such a good car has such a bad gearbox paired with it
