Technical No Sparks !!!!!

First thread (after saying hi ) so be gentle please !


Mk1 8v that was rough running at around 3500rpm, lots of good info on here so looked at changing fuel filter, plugs, leads and carried out the ECU reset (battery disconnected and left for a while) but now it wont start at all !!!!


No warning lights and the EML light (yellow key looking thing on the left of the dash goes out before turning over....... BTW it turns over great !


Checked for sparks (plug out and earthed to block ) nothing from either coils....... looking into the carb I cant see much (if any ) fuel going in there but I do think I hear the fuel pump kicking in !


Really greatful if anyone can point me in the right direction.....

You should see a steady dribble of fuel onto the throttle butterfly, throttle closed, on cranking. If not (and no spark)it's likely (95%+) to be the TDC sensor.

The first thing I would check is the crankshaft sensor as you have no spark. It's unlikely that both coils have failed.

The crankshaft sensor is the same thing as the TDC sensor!

Agree about the coils but did check for sparks out of both.

Found the TDC sensor but how can I check it works before shelling out for another ??

There are values out there, but they're such cranky things that replacement is the only sensible option.

They -- don't throw a fault code as a rule (the ECU just thinks the engine isn't turning.

Ergo, if the sparks don't spark and the fuel doesn't get past the injector(s) and the fuel pump is priming, it's extremely unlikely to be anything else.

can try one off a car in scrappies first if you don't want to shell out for new one without testing. If you do that though get a few of them just to be sure. But as said, it is extremely unlikely to be anything else with them symptoms.

RESULT !!!!


Wasn't worth messing about with old ones (but cheers anyway) £14 for a new one, fitted in seconds and all is good !!
