No preouts on new head unit!

Okay right, long story short but I have just bought a Punto SX 55 '95. I did have a Punto S 55 '96.

I have just switched over some cables and done a lot of wiring from the old car to the new car, and have just realised the head unit doesn't have rear preouts for my sub!

I tried wiring the wires from the amp to the rear speaker cables but it just cuts out the front speakers. I was told it could be something to do with the levels of the stock speakers and sub, so would I need a line out converter? Just checking.

And if so, where can I buy a not so expensive one lol.

Cheers Volxstu, I will definately be buying this . So do I just wire up the cables to the rear right and left speaker wires from the stereo?

Yeah but you will loose the use of your rear speakers. If you currently have lost use of the front speakers then you have already cut into the wrong ones if what i think you have done is correct.
There are line converters that allow you to still use the speakers signals that you are tapping into but i think that they are a bit more expensive. Unfortunately its not my area of expertise as i amp all of my speakers in the car.

Right, well at the moment I have use of all of my speakers, just not the sub. Before I messed around with the wires the rear speakers weren't connected anyway, I connected those today.

I think if I want use of the sub I have to wire the converter to the rear speaker cables, but I can then wire the rear speakers themselves to the amp and still have the front speakers connected to the actual stereo. I'm looking to buy some new speakers for the rear anyway to replace the stock ones.

Have a search on the forum for stereo set up. You ideally want to amp up the front speakers and just use the rears as a little bit of rear fill. What amp and sub do you have. If you need 2 sets of preouts then you would lose all use of speakers from the HU.
May i suggest buying a HU with preouts as you will never get great quality from Line level conversion unless you spend in the hundreds.
