So as the usual story goes when you get in to your other half's car and notice everything wrong under the sun and get the reply of "oh thats been like that a while", including near causing an accident when there was no power at all when pulling off.

So after 3x new tyres, set of discs and pads later..... Before 2,500rpm there is nothing then after it takes off like a rocket!

After doing some searching I wanted to confirm my first port of call was:

  1. MAF Sensor
  2. Turbo Vanes
Now I consider myself pretty savvy when it comes to getting my hands dirty and fixing/replacing a fault but I really have no idea when it comes to turbos.

Makes my skin crawl as the thought of it being a fault and needing replacement sounds like big £££

Anyone had this issue or can advise on problem solving?

Thanks

Same car with yours with 90hp 6 speed gearbox.i noticed too. Especially to uphills.it's impossible to start the car without handbrake and revving. Things are slightly better in reverse gear.
I have the same problem also with my Nissan navara d40 2.5L it needs revving. My previous Toyota hiace 2.5Lcould start very easily in uphills without handbrake assist.instant throttle response even with low revs despite low torque compared with Nissan(400+ Nm).
Egr valve is clean with no problems and no any other problem. Everything works fine. Don't know :p

Could be that the wastegate is seized.

Had this twice on a 1.3 90bhp GP.

Took ages to get it diagnosed, with many places quoting for a new turbo. In the end, one garage loosened and lubed it for about £25 if I remember.

Have a look at the tips in this thread.

The womans car doesnt go in to limp mode as anyone on that post had, however I will certainly try this as it might help things anyway.

Im servicing the car this weekend, going to take out the MAF and give a good clean, anyone found any threads/pictures on vane turbo fixes.

Im hoping its just the MAF, I have a diagnostic computer too but i didnt think there was any point in hooking it up if there was no fault light to bring with. However it does give me real time figures from ECU o if i could find the correct figures for the MAF etc I could fault find better.

Would you not have a warning light with this while pressure builds up?

I had this issue on a 1.9 JTD, have a look at the system that actuates the turbo vanes to check the vaccum pipe is connected properly and has no issues.

I had this issue, take off the egr open it and its the pin on the electronic side that was seized. Might have to take out the whole center and lube up the pin. While its off and open might as well clean the whole thing.

Just thought I would put an update on this.

It cleared itself! The day I finally had some free time I went and lifted the car, drove it 20 mile back to my own house and it was back to perfect acceleration again, well perfect for what a small 1.3 turbo diesel can be lol

Glad to hear it! Sometimes you can't beat a good old Italian tune-up :)
