Technical no main beam only side lights

hi,
can anyone help me out.
i have a fiat marea 1998cc 20v on a 98 plate.i noticed this morning that when i putmy headlights onto main beam both eadlights do not work . The sidelights come on and if i put the lights onto high beam they work fine .i have checked the fuses and the bulbs but to no avail.
any ideas anyone?
