this will sound really stupid to you but i need help with this.

my son,s bravo is ink black and when it is stinking i cant get it off tidy so i have tried several methods none work very well.today i tried rinsing with hose pipe then bucket and sponge warm water with turtle wax then rinse off.

when it is dry the dirt is not all gone but more spread like dust film.i suffer with back problem so washing car is literally a pain and i have problems bending down to wipe ever square inch with a sponge.

so i am looking for ideas of making this easy for me it does happen on my b but it doesn't show up so bad on the blue but i am getting swirls on it what causing that please?

any idea is better than nothing as i don't want to give up washing the car i like the end results when i can get it clean and i know i can use a car wash but i still have some pride:)

thanks in advance

Chamois leather and rinse the car with de-ionised water if you can afford it, or make your own. You need a good quality Chammy, kept clean and in good shape, it should always smell of leather when wet, when it doesnt replace it, or when it wears thin or holes appear. Always worked for me, and still does. But black is an awful colour to keep looking mint.

dont use a sponge, they scratch the paint, hence the swirl marks. instead buy a microfibre noodle pad, like this:
Q2429.jpg

you can get them at supermarkets and motorfactors and even pound shops.

you need to get your son to polish the cars, then cleaning is much easier, adn you have less residue on the car after washing. autoglym super resin polish is popular, but i prefer carnauba wax, its harder to apply but it lasts a lot longer.

if polish doesnt do the trick use some colour t-cut first, then polish.

i agree black is a very difficult to colour to maintain.

I wouldn't use T-cut colour a friend of the family has just bought a Black vectra and the garage had used something like this to mask several deep scratches  the more the car was washed the more patchy the bonnet became :bang:

Also Super resin Polish is just that a POLISH it is not a wax or sealant and doesn't pretend to be so you use this AND a wax or sealant afterwards (have a look at Auto Glym Extra Gloss Protection for ease of use and availability ) i tend to polish, seal and put a good carnauba wax on top of that it lasts for months....

Bin the sponge for a start as jug said its a recipe for fine scratch marks (AKA swirls) a foam gun can be a good investment to pre-wash the car but are expensive... a spray with a garden sprayer with a weak mix of car shampoo followed by a good rinse with a hose before you start with the wash mit will remove the thickest of the grime..

a few friends have the white residue problem having watched them try to clean the car i concluded (boy do i sound like a pro :p) that they either let the car shampoo dry on the car, the car shampoo left a residue/ they used too much and they didnt rinse well enough....

Some wash and wax or cheaper shampoo's tend to leave a residue behind which can stick to the paint work...

your best off looking for a quality car shampoo (Note shampoo not wash and wax)

There are plenty to pick from and it can be argued till the cow's comes home which is best but from my experience something like Meguires Gold Class, Or NXT Generation wash, Autoglym Body conditioner Or Zymol Auto wash... would be a good start might seem expensive however they are all high concentrates which means you need less in the first place so the bottle lasts longer than the cheap stuff these are all available from the likes of halfords and motorworld

have a good read of this: (will explain the swirl marks)

As for drying Bin the Chammy and invest in a Drying towel

expensive but about the same price as a decent seamless chammy

Hope that helps (y)

I personally havent got a grit guard i just use the 2 buckets and rub it with my hand..

but they can be had here
http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=162

or with a bucket
http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=202

as for the foam lance

there are 2 general types one which works off a pressure washer which gives a good whiped cream effect and a hose pipe gun "gilmour" which isnt as thick but works fine for me... (obviously the PW lance you have to drag the PW out every time you wash the car)

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=188

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=302

you also want the correct fluid if you go down that route..

the soap dispenser is ok for a pre wash but the foam gun airates the solution there for "dwells" for longer giving the chemical time to work and the bubbles drag the dirt off..

hi thanks that's handy i like the idea of a foam stick so if i get one of these, can i just blast with soap then rinse with water after, will this do away with the need to hand rub the car.

then i can save energy for the polishing(y)

found some nice stuff on the site you pm me that's great thanks

the foam takes the thickest off but leaves behind the traffic film which needs a bit of persuasion from a very light rub over with a wash mit, you could use a traffic film remover but this will strip the wax off the car (as these none contact car wash firms do) followed by a pressure wash rinse

or get your son to help you do the lower bits :D

dug around my shed today and found a bottle thing that fits with my pressure washer so filled it with rubbish halford shampoo and turned it on. wow foam every where, i think i have found my own foam lance.so if i use this how do regulate the mix or doesn't that matter.and i think i will get some good shampoo from that nice site.
so when i have foamed the car is it ok to rub with sheepskin mitt the rinse off.
and is it very important to dry paint or can i make tea and watch the sun do its stuff before i polish?
i did see on that site autoglym do a polish you can add when it still wet ever tried that? i have got the super resin polish i think its called that makes a good shine.

If your going down the detergant bottle route (nothing wrong with that i just got sick and tired of dragging the Pressure washer out every time i cleaned the car)

if your going to use it i'd buy the cheapest car shampoo going something like turtle wax Big Orange in 5 ltr containers for about £5.. mixed before you put in your lance bottle you will have to play about with the mix (depends on how hard the water is) i use about 250ml of shampoo made up to 1ltr with water is enough to do the car.

i personally rinse it off then use a 2 bucket and mit wash after that but some people do foam the car up then go at it with the mit washing the mit in a bucket of clean water after each panel to remove the grime stuck to the mit.
Then rinse with plenty of water...

i'd dry the car that way you remove as much of the water as you can or you will get limescale marks left which are a bu66er to rub off..

to make life easyer when drying look at the Autoglym Hydro blade basically a BIG squidgy (spl) but the car must be totally grit free before you start as a bit of grit stuck between the Hydroblade and the paint will inflict Huge linear scratches it must also be kept clean i wipe mine after each pass on a clean cloth to remove any dirt that has been picked up.

That stuff you refer to from Auto Glym (aqua wax is it by any chance) is very very good (imo i have the trade bottle renamed as Express wax ((same stuff)) but does not Polish the car its non abrasive its a quick way to wax the car that is already in a good condition i use it to top up the wax over winter the trick with it i found is to use it very sparingly or it is a complete PITA to buff off one 1 ltr bottle will do 3-4 cars this way it also works well on plastic trim and side windows..

but you cant beat a proper set too with the good old super resin polish. i did my car at the back end of last year i clayed the car (this is the problem when you start to realize what you can get for each job the amount of stuff you can spend your money on far out strips your bank balance :bang:) Clay is a special bar of synthetic clay which removes things stuck to the paint like tree sap, tar and things like that....

details on what clay is

http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=4829

i use this http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=91

and its the best in my eyes for beginners ( i used it the first time last year) no need for special lubricants just cheap water

(once clayed the car must be polished/waxed the same day)

followed with super resin polish using a foam applicator pad (you use less polish that way (can you tell im a Yorkshire man :D,

http://www.elitecarcare.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=137

followed by a thin coat of Autoglym Extra gloss protection which is left for an hour to "cure" then buffed off followed by another coat,

You can stop at this point the car will be gleaming many people will be more than happy with the results..

BUT if you have plenty of time and no social life (says me tying this at 1/4 to 10 on a friday night  )

you can spend an extra hour putting on a top coat of wax which adds an extra shine which the sealant doesn't dependent on the wax you use it will last months the Collinite range seems to be the longest lasting on the market at a reasonable price the tin is apparently good for 20+ applications which seems viable as you cant see ive used mine and done my car with 2 coats and my mums the other week with one and the tin still looks unused

when you get a result like this:

it almost seems worth it until you next use the car or it rains

wow what a shinier !!! i need my shades on
thanks for all that info, didn't realise it was important to dry the car might explain like a white film on the car.will try the blade for that but i have arthritis in wrist so i may not get on with that will see but as a back up i have thought about a microfibre towel and the pat method that would be ok for my hands but would i look as good as useing a blade?

what do you think about these electric polisher you get in halfords any good?

well after much shopping i have noddle pads and microfibre cloths and with my sheepskin mitt and power washer i set out in the sun today!!

wow the results after following all the great advice mine and my son car a gleaming i am well chuffed thanks guys super job!!!!!

yes but i am no real expert  Found DW after i attacked the clear coat on my GP with a car wash brush then  a lot when i parked under a filling station canopy with the londitudinal marring associated with going back and forth with the brush :bang: (Brush is now in the bin) managed to get 95% of them out by hand with scratch X (that was a labor of love) then srp gets better each time i polish it more and more comes out someone on here linked to DW when i was looking for a solution, and i've been getting drawn into the idea ever since, it costs a smegging fortune i think i have more car cleaning stuff in my garage than halfords  my Mum and Dad seem to like it too since their cars are now being spoilt (well to them they are) you ever tried doing a flipping focus estate it takes all day :( at least mums KA can be done in a couple of hours

that finish will do me lol

(dont look at the wing mirror its loose on purpose tucked masking tape under it to stop the polish marks )

You say that but it is worth it when it rains, if you put on a couple of coats of the wax, the collinite stuff especially! The water will just bead on the bodywork and run off, i find its brilliant. When i would go down to the girlfriends in swansea in the Fabia i would just run the car over with the hose for 2 mins and all the horrible motorway gunk just runs off. Well worth the considerable effort every 4-6 months. Not done the GPS since i bought it a few weeks back so im going to spend next fri/sat doing mine.

My process:
2 minute blast over with PW to remove loose dirt
Cover in foam, leave for 5 mins.
Blast with PW again on mist setting to remove foam
Wash using 2 bucket method, with Meguairs Hyperwash, panel by panel
Then clay the bonnet, bumpers and bottom of doors
Dry with microfibre towel
Polish with AG SRP, applying with foam applicator sponge and buffing off with microfibre cloth, again panel panel by panel.
Do the glass with AG Glass Polish, car shampoos can leave residues with can cause nasty smearing in direct sunlight.
Then a coat of #476 Collinite Wax, applying with foam applicator, doing 2 panels at a time before buffing with microfibre cloth, allows a few mins for the wax to bed in.
Then another coat of the wax within 12 hours.
Then admire :)
