Hi all,
I am new to cars, I have been a biker for the last 4 years...
I have recently bought a Punto mk 2 (03 plate)
Since buying it a month about 6 weeks ago I have had a new clutch, reconditioned gearbox,
Is it normal for a gearbox to make a whirring sound?
It only seems to be in 1st n 2nd gear but its a horrible noise....
There is a slight rattle that accompanies the noise and I just wonder if the mechanic who fitted it, lined the gears up correctly? Because in 2nd gear I can feel the rattle through the accelerator pedal....
I suppose the question is....
Is the car knackered???

Some advice would be extremely helpful.... :)

It doesn't sound normal, no. Especially if you're feeling it coming through the accelerator - in the half a dozen cars I've driven, that's always been the one "smooth" pedal.

I'm not sure what the problem might be, but if it's had new clutch and recond gearbox, I'd start looking there. If it was only a month or so ago, take it back to where ever you had the work done, go on a quick drive with them and get them to try driving it. They'll know best what the issue might be. Short of that... I'd say hang in and wait for one of the more knowledgeable members to drop in and offer more help :)

Ok thankyou ormo, just been out driving it and it only seems to be when I go right in 2nd round a round about, at around 2000-2500revs.

At 1st I thought it just needed running in?

Thanks again.... ;)

Very welcome, and welcome to the forum :)

Does the vibration vary with speed at all? It might be worth looking at the wheel balance, but that's probably quite unlikely. My first port of call would definitely be the garage who did the work you mentioned.

Thanku ormo... I am on the case today...
The vibration does vary with speed once I'm over like 25-30mph it stops....

Thanks for that raul, I have just spoken to a friend who is a mechanic he has also said the same input shaft or drive shaft....
Or even did the mechanic who done the repair put oil back in the gearbox?
I will keep you all posted on the outcome, my mate is guna look at it on sunday...
Fingers crossed! :)
