Hi to anyone who maybe reading this...Ive tried asking a question about a possible gearbox issue on the forum a number of times now, and cant seem to get them on?!
What am I doing wrong??!
And if anyone mechanically minded CAN actually read this, please may I ask you my gearbox releted issue?!
Thanks in advance?!

Darren

Hi Charlie!
Thanks for your reply mate! Basically, my wifes 54' Punto suddenly went wrong last week, the gearstick suddenly going 'floppy', and only moving very loosely backwards & forward, but not side to side. It was also still in reverse. I was told that it was probably the gearbox 'cables/rods' that'd snapped/come off, etc. though after following advice off this forum, I did the 'test' by popping the ball-sockets off both cables/rods, at both the gearstick, AND the engine/gearbox end, and both upper and lower cables/rods are working perfectly. The cluth is also working perfectly fine. What I have found out, is (as I am looking towards the car standing infront of the bonnet, looking down towards the engine...) that when the 'lower' cable/rod is in either the left or right position, the 'upper' cable/rod will not allow the 'lever' (where it is attached to the gearbox/engine) to move at all, yet when the lowere rod/cable is in the 'middle' position, it will allow the upper rod/cable to move, as the lower rod/cable also then moves 'inwards' from the middle position, towards the engine...does that make any sense mate??!
PLEASE pal, ANY information/ideas would be greatly appreciated!! We are EXTREMELY short of cash at the mo, and if I can at least 'identify' the issue for definate, then at least we can tell the garage what it is, which would hopefully cut down on some of the costs??!

Thank you in advance Charlie, many regards, Darren

Thanks mate for all the info, but Im afraid that Ive done all of these 'checks'!!
It is DEFO NOT anything to do with the cable/rods/linkages, as Ive done all of the ball-socket, etc. checks, and the cables/rods are moving both ways just fine, no looseness, no stiffness, etc. the problem seems to be where the 'upper' cable (as looking down over the engine from the front of the car...) is attajhced to the engine/gearbox..
It is on a small, 3-inch or so sized 'lever', which as I said earlier, will only move when the lowere cable, is in the 'middle' position, it wont move when the other one is in either the left or right position...!?

Ive already removed all of the gearstick gaiter and housing, etc, and as I mentioned, all of the gearstick ball-sockets, etc. are totally fine, well lubricated, and work just fine, it all seems to be at the engine end, where the upper lever ('after/behind' the ball-socket...) just does not seem to want to move, unless the lower cable/rod is in the middle position...
