Hi to all members from a newbie in sunny SA ! :)

My brothers 1.3 turbo diesel with a broken cam chain and oil in the cooling system has become my latest project . So i have many questions which i hope forum members will be able me with . I have already stripped the engine . No bent valves , so question no.1 , is this an interference engine or not ? The next question is the thickness of the head gasket . The original is 0.1mm thicker than the one supplied to me . Will 0.1mm be a problem as the supplier might not allow returns . I chose the thinnest one available as this engine has never been opened before , I therefore presumed the thinnest would be the correct one , but comparing part numbers on the gaskets , the two differ by 0.1mm .

When i get to the cam timing , i will post further questions .

Hopefully members can help me out .

Regards
Garth

I always thought of this engine as an interference engine, but it seems they break followers rather than bend the valves.

As for thinner gasket, I would rather go same size as original or if having the head skimmed, a thicker gasket. But if no head damage, no requirement for skimming.

However, if there is oil in the cooling system and if there is no damage to the original gasket, I would be having the head pressure tested. The last thing you want is to do all the repair work only to have oil in the cooling system again!!

Hi Andoo

Thank you for the info . I will have the head pressure tested and buy the correct gasket
Will be back soon with questions regarding the cam timing.

Cheers
Garth
