Personally I stick to 5 Years or 50K miles for timing belts.
If the car has done a lot of short trips, start stop driving and town work then 3 Years & 36K miles or 4 Years / 48K miles is worth considering.
Not only does the belt need renewing but the tensioner, main idle/stretcher pulley and water pump need changing as well.
Changing them is a little more involved than for a petrol engine (as the covers are part of the engine support/mount structure which require removing) but certainly DIY do-able IF YOU USE THE CORRECT TIMING TOOLS.
Do NOT attempt if you do not have suitable skills AND do not have the correct timing tools.
Given the tools and skills then doing the job slowly are carefully for the first time will take you around 3 to 4 hours. No point in rushing this job.
