Hi everyone. My son is a first time driver and recently purchased a 2006 grande punto from a private seller. Within five days of purchase it broke down and according to the RAC it needs a gearbox, clutch and drive shaft. It's currently parked up and I suppose I'm just looking for advice on parts. I have been getting quotes from breakers but the prices are vastly different. This is a bit of a mare for us and just proves that you shouldnt buy a car without a mechanic going with you. Is there a chance the RAC could be wrong and I need a second opinion before buying parts? Hopefully I have attached a photo to this showing a part that has split in two. Not sure what it is.

A second opinion, i guess would always be wise.
However, if he's saying that you require a clutch, box and driveshaft, whatever it was that went was pretty catastrophic.
It's difficult to say, looking at your photograph, but i'd say that it looks like part of the gearbox casing where the drive shaft would enter.

Id suggest that a full clutch will cost about £80 - £120 depending on where you buy.
A used Driveshaft maybe about £50 and a used gearbox about £250-£300, then the time to remove and refit, you could be looking at another £300 for labour, from a small independent.

If you're capable of doing the work yourself, over a weekend, and if you drop on the right prices etc, then around £500 could fix this.

How confident are you that it was a private sale ?
I believe there is some sort of Inland Revenue rule that selling more than 3 cars per year, can be deemed as being a trader.
So if this is the case, you may just have a legal route to go down.
Of course if you bought it from the owner who's had it for 3 years, then you're not so lucky.
