Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd write some of my thoughts on the Barchetta. Well, purchased in 2004 brand new. Great car for looks etc. but this one is a Friday afternoon car. So far I have done 36,000 miles and have had to have the locks replaced, both rear wheel bearings, discs and pads, a new exhaust and now the Camshaft variator. That being said, I have been to three garages, two main dealers and an independent one.
Fish Brothers Swindon. On the first service I was told that the car was filthy and covered in tree sap that's why the locks(the little metal flap cover) were stuck open. Therefore as I had not taken any care they were not covered by the warranty! Spoke to Fiat UK and they said they were. Manager at Fish brothers no help at all, so please avoid.(n)
Pewsham Fiat, Chippenham. Fixed locks with no quibble.(replaced them) Then had a service and a strange noise started coming from the rear. Eventually problem found and wheel bearings replaced, with discs and pads courtesy of the warranty. Front of house excellent, can not help enough.:)
Optima motors, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. An independent Fiat/ Alfa garage. Friendly, cheaper but stated the camshaft variator that was now very noisy was not covered under the warranty. Also said the exhaust was gone, a bracket had completely rusted away. :)
Returned to Fiat Pewsham.... yes they were covered and all sundry items. In next week for the work.
So mixed experience so far of the Barchetta.
Awaiting an exhaust for over a week now as TNT have lost it in transit- no help in trying to find it either!
Will keep you updated as to anymore problems but as it's sunny the roof is coming off and off for a blat down the A419!
Bye for now.

Yep the Barchetta is like having a supermodel girlfriend. Great lines and lovely to look at, as well as fun with her top down in the sunshine ;-)

Problem is she can be temperamental and really high maintenance now and again, as well as costing you a fortune.

But I am sure all B owners know this (y)

:) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :) :D :)

Hello and welcome by the way. Nice to see a new member posting threads :)

Welcome indeed. I'm fairly new here too, although I've had my barchetta for three and a half years now.

There's plenty of good information here which arms and prepares you to deal with garages such as those you mention.

Welcome mate! hope you will enjoy the forum! lots of worthy people here ;)

Bought my car when it was 18 months old from Fish Brothers in Swindon. Same story when things went wrong. Didn't even try and diagnose problems - simply said they weren't covered. Black & White Garage in Cold Ash (just north of Newbury off the A34) are a good independent garage when your warranty is up!

Welcome to the Forum - I'll keep my eyes peeled for you as I travel around Berkshire and Wiltshire quite a bit. Silver, '53 reg face lifted barchetta (currently with hard top on but soon to come off!) Patches (Kerry)

Certainly sounds like a Friday afternoon car especially needing new wheel bearings after so low mileage:( As for the variator, I thought the problems with these was only on the older earlier cars:mad:

Hi everyone and thanks for the great welcome. Quick update.... Pewsham Fiat (y) have fitted the new variator and Fiat UK paid for everything including the cambelt itself. Car cleaned, so great service. Having just purchased a new exhaust on the web (£130 incl delivery) was disappointed to see the DTR exhaust as it sounds worthwhile having...next time!
For those of you passing through Wiltshire or Glos, the Car is a 54 plate in black. The better half usually drives it, so if you can catch her wave and flash hello.
Bye for now,
Tim

£60 and three points for not being hands free now too!!!

In response to how the car is now the variator has been changed... smmoth as smooth, no rattles from the engine at all. A little judderry at 30 in third so may need a little tuning, or is it the b telling me to floor it??

welcome to a great site, i have not been a member long but just like me you will find out there are alot of great and very helpful members on this site - enjoy !!!(y)

Tomorrow I will buy a Barchetta fabrication year 2001 and I want to know how necessary is the hardtop for it and why.
Tell me please also, at what number of kilometers do I have to change the distribution and what usual problems do those cars have.
Please I need a very quick answer.
Thanks a lot

By distribution do you mean the timing belt?

Common problems appear to be leaks(window position & rubbers ripped hood or broken rear window panel), variator, central locking, scraping wipers,

Yes I mean the timing belt and also the hole kit of distribution.
And what about the hardtop?
I found a hardtop with 380 euros. Do you think it worth it, I mean is it necessary or better for wintertime or the softtop is enough?
