124 Spider (Classic) New to Fiat Forum ??

Thanks so much for the add! I’m new to the Fiat family. Can someone please help me or guide me in finding the model and engine specs of my vehicle? I tried googling the VIN # to no avail. Is there a better site to decode the VIN?

I don't know much about the 124 Spider but used to be into 124 Coupes which are similar in many ways.

According to the book 'Fiat and Lancia Twin-Cams by Phil Ward in the U.K. (ISBN 0-947981-57-8), your model would appear to be:-

1977 USA spec 1756cc CSI Spider (i.e 3rd series of this model, 1st and 2nd series being the AS1 and BS1)
The engine is 1756cc, bore x stroke = 84x 79.2mm, Compression Ratio 8.9:1,
producing 118 bhp @ 5,800rpm used in the USA spec model from 1974-1978.
This engine is based on the 132 (2nd version of the twin cam) so need to be careful ordering spares parts as the earlier (1438, 1608cc) engine had different cylinder blocks, bore spacings, cyl. heads, head gaskets etc.etc.

Your paint color appears to my eyes as being 194 which afaik is Fiat Rosso also sometimes called Fiat 19 Red.

Thank you so much for that information. I began to disassemble the engine and noticed some parts I need to order...water pump, crankshaft...I’d probably would go with overhauling the whole engine. What website do you recommend me going for parts?

As I'm in Ireland, I can't advise on parts suppliers but a simple google search throws up many names in the USA e.g autoricambi, midwest-bayless, mrfiat which have been favourably mentioned on various Fiat forums. Another supplier is www.spiderroadster.com which has a section on model identification incl. the location of engine numbers - it might be advisable to check that your car is still fitted with the original engine before ordering any parts etc.


Rather than continue to post on fiatforum where few have knowledge of the 124 Spider (it was never officially imported into the U.K.) you might get better, locally relevant information by registering with and posting your questions on www.fiatspider.com which is a USA based website where all the experts on the 124 Spider seem to hang out.

Thanks again for your help! I will try the other forum. I have done some more research and it seems a bit confusing because the engine # on the firewall is different than the engine number on the engine block. I went to the website that I have gone before and searched through the numbers there and can’t seem to find it. Tag displays 132A1.040.6 and my engine block has a number displaying 131AB.40/7 and on top of that it has 4381917. I went through some threads and found something that mentioned that same question I had but no one seemed to know, at least I didn’t seem to find an answer. The person asking thought it meant it was a 2000 series but I’m not quite sure.

As I suggested, you need to use the number on your actual engine if ordering parts and not rely on the tag/vin plate details. Beware also, that it's possible to swap cylinder heads between some of the twin cams engines, so identifying the cyl, head doesn't necessarily identify the engine block e.g. a cylinder head from a small capacity block may have been fitted to a larger capacity block to e.g. raise compression ratio.

I can't find the engine code 131AB.40/7 in any of the lists I consulted.

The nearest I've found is 131AB.1A.0. This is a later type engine of 1585cc used in the Fiat 131/Brava but I can't be sure this is your actual engine.

If you have already removed the cylinder head, you could measure the bore and stroke to possibly determine which engine is currently fitted in your car.
Here is a list of engine capacities used in various older Fiats and the corresponding bore and stroke measurement:-
1297cc - 76mm bore x 71.5mm stroke
1301cc - 76.1mm x 71.5mm
1366cc - 78.1mm x 71.5mm
1438cc - 80mm x 71.5mm
1585cc - 84mm x 71.5mm
1592cc - 80mm x 79.2mm
1608cc -80mm x 80mm
1756cc - 84mm x 79.2mm
1995cc - 84mm x 90mm

Alternatively you might try submitting the actual numbers you see on the side of your engine block to one of the parts suppliers who hopefully can then definitively identify your engine.
