My rear number plate has been looking a bit shoddy for a while. Yellow and white plates with black plastic 3D letters.

While I was still a teenager I tidied it up a bit. The plastic letters and the plate were ok, but the reflective yellow had mostly peeled away.

Armed with a limited knowledge and budgets I bought a reflective rear sheet from a motor factors for a£1 or so and bonded it on with contact adhesive. The starlocks were all rusted and I didn't know where to buy replacements so each one was held on with a dab of epoxy glue on each letter pin.

For it's lack of sophistication it has held up well over the last 19 years, but it's time for a replacement.

I visited Tippers plates and was slightly aghast at the price. (I am Scottish.) So I ordered a set of Blank plates so I could use my own letters. This turned out to be a good plan since there were several font styles around this time.

I have also hidden the fasteners behind the letters and used a threaded spacer to act as an upstand, and captive faster retention. I'll get the front one sorted out soon, but it doesn't look too bad so I'm in no rush

Very nice. Great to see the original style for once. :)
Thanks Peter. Not all of my car is standard, there are a few 126 parts here and there, but I am particular about original plates for some reason.

I'm not really fussed about using non-original 500 parts or style despite my daft moniker. But it's not my thing to make cosmetic changes where the original component or style has a special attractiveness or unique Fiat style. (sunroofs apart :D )
Of course number-plates varied over the years and between countries but original-style, UK, raised letter and digit plates look just right to me and are increasingly rare to see with so many people fitting black and silver or white ones on classic cars in general and small, Italian facsimiles on Fiat 500s in particular.

Ooh so mine pass with the patinated seal of approval? Unfortunately they are not very patinated as some sado refurbished them:D They are actually the original plates that were fitted to the car in 1966.

The little detail that went into them is a sign of the times. Particularly the W.

That looks like the same font as my plate although my car is a 1973! I'm getting a bit carried away with this number plate stuff now. I'm not sure this is where I seen my older self.

Oh don’t worry it happens to us all. :nutter: Don’t worry both myself and Peter used to (well still do but don’t post much) reside and regularly post on another classic car forum. There were people on there that were guru’s and completely obsessed with making sure you had the correct font on your number plate for the age of your car and if you didn’t they became quite upset.

It's good that they don't have anything more serious to worry about so they can devote their time to the serious matter of number plates.
