Well it's not new. I've always had it, it's just more regualar now.

Whenever I cold start my car, for about the first mile, when I moderately accelerate, I get a shreiking noise (like a strangled mallard[)])up to about 3000rpm from under the bonnet. Any ideas?

i think i get the same problem, i just assumed that it was my fan belt slipping but maybe its more sinister

Fan belt. Mine did exactly the same. Took it to a garage explaining the noise, they looked at it and said it was nothing. Asked on here and Pete said it would be the fan belt. I took it back to the garage and asked them to check if it was too loose or too tight, lo and behold, it was the fan belt. Just goes to show, a garage will take your money for fook all, but explain to them exactly what you want doing and they'll fix your car.

Beware, Science bit coming up.

After you have started the car, using electickery from the battery, and then started to drive off with, let me guess in this weather, heater, HRW, Lights, wipers, ICE, the alternator has to work quite hard and the back EMF requires more from the fan belt to overcome said EMF. If the belt is a bit loose, and or the pully a bit damp, skweely noise for a bit. Once the alternator is up to speed. the noise will go away unless the engine falls to idle.

Cheers

Ah, the noise is slightly high pitched than the one on start up and is in sync with the revs. Well i'm going to get it checked out. On my way home though tonight, I had a race with another Yellow Sporting (won on best of three) and it does the noise all the time since but a lot quieter. Although on a good note, I moved away from the yellow Sei as I went a different way home and guess what pulled up alongside me in the car park. Very nice young lady too;) we'll see how it goes after our drink on wed eve.

I had exaclty the same thing not to long ago, i asked my teacher at college (trainee mechanic) he said it was the alternator belt, all i did was move the offside wheel to the left then you can acsess the two bolts the the alternator release those 2 bolts but only a little bit, then have another person lever the alternator up, while there doing that tighten the 2 bolts back up, your belt should be tight. The belt should only twist 90 degrees and not have any major splits of cracks in it. Short term solution to this problem was spraying wd40 on the belt which stopped the squelling.:)

as fingers said it could be that or could be tensioner for cambelt.. Does the car make the squeak when idling? If so spray a little WD on the alternator belt, if its that it will stop squeaking for a little bit.. Try same on tensioner ;)
This is NOT a fix, just a way to tell which is making noise..
