Hi there everyone, im a recent new owner of a punto hgt off of the famous old ebay, wasnt even looking for one but a few cheeky bids later and am the frustrated owner of a yellow 51 plate punto hgt,its a lovely looking car 17"bk alloys, twin-twin exit stainless exhaust lovely eye catching fiat yellow, came also with a full body kit and original front bumper which iv kept on as the kit one is way too low for general everyday speed bumps.. but then there are the problems iv had since i drove off, i picked the car up from outter london.. a slow journey on the motorway due to thick fog.as i got onto familiar territory i thought id open her up and see what she could do,then BANG! it now sounds like a cross between a tractor and a metal press trying to reshape some piston heads.... there is no power in the car and if i press the throttle too fast it wont react and sound like hell in a can..there is no over heating or water/oil loss, although i have now found the oil to have been filled way too high..
im imagining that the engine is totally caput, so basically does ne1 know where to get a recon engine from in the west mids area??.... i have already scoured ebay and no such luck.. all help appreciated....
and yes i have contacted ebay and there is nothing they can do and the seller also has ignored all calls texts and emails

Hi and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

Its sounds like the timeing has slipped or something, and on the 1.8 thats most probably going to have done a fair bit of damage.

I cant help with places in the West Mids, im sure someone else can though. But they do come up on e-bay from time to time, so don't give up with that.

Alan

Hi alan

thanks for the welcome. still trying to get to grips with the forum but shouldnt take long.

iv took the car to the garage now, luckily iv found an ex fiat mechanic literally round the corner from me. He did mention about about slipping a few teeth...how does that happen and what if you reset the allignment?

Hi mate,

The belt can slip for a few reasons. Normally its if the tensioner fails, which would suggest that it was well over the recommended tensioner/cam belt replacement interval.

Sometimes when a belt slips, you can simply re align the timing, fit a new belt and tensioner, and away you go without any trouble. HOWEVER from the sound you have been describing, it sounds like the pistons have been making contact with your valves, and therefore there is likely to be damage.

It may just require a few new valves, or possibly a whole new engine, but your mechanic will only know that ones he's had a good look inside.

Good luck,
Alan
