The train dust doesn't tend to come from the cars being on the train - it also comes from being parked in storage yards next to the tracks. Guess where most of the storage yards are...

I saw many things in my years as a professional valeter. When I find spots I can't easily credit to something else. I'll look at the evidence again.

Theres a world of difference between valeting and detailng:)

Hi all back to old rusty , the car went back to fiat body shop where they gave it a mop and polish assuring us this would rectify this ......... alas no the car is pepperd all over with these tiny spots . an indipendent specialist is coming today to inspect it . my partner loves the car but has had nothing but problems dealing with fiat where there only response for the the first few months was to remind her to keep up her payments . Its amazing how fast they responded when trading standerds contacted them..Our dealer is simonstone bristol . i would like to add if they take the car back she would happily buy another one but not from them . Thanks again for your help and advice ..Al

I'd love to see the mess Central Bodyshop made of the car, they would have been who mopped it, am awfull process.

Mention to Alan Spencer at Simonstone what happened when they were let loose on my car (ended up with Fiat ordering me a new one).

If you are local I'l happily take a look at it for you, I could most likely fix it (at Simonstones expense)

Good idea to get an independant specialist to check it but ensure hes fully independant. Marks advice also worth seeking BUT DONT let anyone else attempt to rectify it, the minuite you do Fiat have a get out clause.

Moping will have taken a small amount of paint off so worth getting the independant to measure the remaining paint finish, if hes a specialist he can do that.

Depending on what the specialist finds, if its bad then as you love the car I would insist on a full respray at a bodyshop of your choice & take time to research that, massive compensation or a new car. It sounds like you have been fair & patient but now is time to bring it to a close

Not strictly true.

It you get Simonstone to agree that they pay somebody to look at it other than that AWFULL bodyshop, on the condition that if the rust spots can't be rectified by claying, carefull polishing etc they will still sort it for you (e.g. replace the car) the weight of responsibilty is still with the supplying dealer, as the suppied the car with the fault in the first place.

If you need a report, tell Simonstone I'll do it for then (ask Alan Spencer there about how persuasive I can be, to the extent that FIAT replaced my car). I could even take a look at a patch of paint for you, if I can cure it you can then tell Simonstone that you know somebody that can sort it & see what they say.

Al Hi,
Any further news ? I too have spots on a simonstone car- Can did/they sort it?

Cheers

Can anyone advise . My partner has recently purchased a fiat 500 and after 3 weeks it is begin to show spots of rust.. We have contacted the dealer who in turn have contacted fiat, only to say its not their problem .. The Dealer now claim the cause of this is due to sparks coming from the train in transit and will be remedied by applying (DITERGISMOG) all over, leaving it on for a hour the peeling off . Ive goggled DITERGISMOG and had no hits. So my question is : Have you heard of anything like this before ...

Regards Alan
Hi there - just joined up to the Fiat Forum in desperation ... I have loads of rust spots on my Baby Blue fiat 500 bought in Bournemouth last Sept and I have been fobbed off saying that it is not under warranty as it is not interior rusting but particles causing the rust erosion on the paint work and did I live near a railway as this could be the cause. I guess I need to take an independent RAC or AA body work specialist back to Fiat with me, as by the sounds of this this is a generic problem that is coming to light. I know back in the mid 80's Fiat had a terrible reputation with producing Rust Buckets, but had supposedly rectified this. Surely if more than one Fiat 500 is having this issue (again on the back of the car around the boot area, reg plate, bumper and roof) it is a Fiat Body work/ paint issue. I was told at Fiat in Poole, that they had never heard of this issue before, but feel they are just trying to fob me off. I dont see how wax will sort this out, as some of my rust spots actually have left a little groove when you run your finger nail over them. Never been on a forum before, but just trying to get some other peoples experience really as feeling really low that my dream car is now flawed! Thanks Lisa - Bournemouth

Iron or steel dust in the air thrown up by various machinery can embed itself in soft new paint and rust. It will be most evident in the parts of the car that pick up dirt the most, like the back, and the roof, where particles settle.

This is not the underlying car, but the metallic 'dust'. It can and does happen with any car.

I've got this on mine which is 2 months old , but it's not the cars fault. You can clean them off and more will appear in different places. Basically I think it's road dirt which includes metal particles from brake disc debris that accumulates on the road. The back of a 500 gets dirty very quickly and then when it rains some of the particles rust. I've had it on the rear of every car I have ever had. Whenever you use your brakes the discs will wear a little, so think of how much of this must end up on the road.

feeling really low that my dream car is now flawed! Thanks Lisa - Bournemouth

Lisa, don't worry, I (and many other owners) had this problem and it is reasonably easy to rectify. The "rust" particles are on the suface of the paint, not the metal beneath which, by the way has been dipped to protect it from rusting.

Get a clay bar (personally I use Meguiars products with the quick detailing spray) and follow the instructions to remove all the surface defects.

When it feels as smooth as a baby's bum then you can apply a good quality sealant/wax.

My car is a year old and it was all over the back of the car, even the plastic bumpers so obviously not rust per se. I have had to do this twice now but it is fairly quick and easy and makes for a lovely smooth surface for waxing.

Hi all, well the saga continues really, the car has just been in for its second treatment which is a chemical wash which is left on then peeled off . I,ll keep you all posted on its progress. My partners last chat with Alan spencer at Simone Stone was nearly reassuring as we thought he was being honest when he said he'd had another 5 in with the same problem, but when I spoke to him he could not back pedal fast enough and claimed maybe three with slightly different problems,"thats more like it" , So when we went to central body shop to have the second tratment done we found out they have had not one or three or five but at least a dozen with exactly the same fault not similar but exactly. And where are the cars sent to them from ?..... yep you guessed it Simone Stone !! So if anyone would like contact info for trading standards or any other info please contact me at : [email protected] and I'll put you in touch with Natasha (the mrs ) .. I think the more people present this issue the quicker Fiat will start dealing with it.

But how exactly is it Fiat's problem when it happens to all new cars with soft paint if they exist in the 'wrong' environment? Perhaps there is a cause near the dealer??

I looked at hundreds of cars in my area and have not found any with the same problem , and im not sure i understand about soft paint , should it be soft ? Please as i said any info most welcome ..

With all new cars the paint is fresh and takes a few weeks to properly harden. During this time it is more vulnerable to scratching and other damage. For this reason I have always washed new cars by hand for a couple of months, and then stuffed them through the carwash as per usual  My present car is six years old and hasn't been hand washed for nearly all of that time, except to get off really difficult mess like dried grass or cow muck, and the paint is just dandy. Every few washes I give it a treat and have the expensive wax wash :p

I have metallic of course, which has the added lacquer coat.
