New engine!!!!!!

First off Happy St.Paddy`s day to all the Irish guys and gals!

Recently had to replace the engine in my 1997 bravo 1.9TD (due to 2 cracks in the block). Got the new one dropped in last night but wont start. There is fuel getting to all the injectors etc... I have a feeling it may be a electric thing. Does anyone know if the ECU needs reset or anything? When u connect the battery, the injector light and the key symbol light that says code under it comes on in the dash!

Just wondering if anyone has done anything like this before and can shed any light on what it may be.

Thanks in advance

Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

You've got to keep the same engine ECU as its matched to the CODE ECU. They are paired up at birth. You will need to either fit the CODE ECU from the car where the new engine came from, or fit your old engine ECU to the new engine. Fiat told me this was located under the diesel pump and was difficult to get to, requireing the cam belt to be removed. How true this is I don't know as I didn't have the work done in the end.

If its a brand new engine with a virgin ECU I suspect there is a matching procedure to match the CODE unit with the engine. Ther was a thread on this in the very early days of the forum, where one helpful guy called Alan explained how to code up a new system with red keys etc. May be worth having a trawl.

Keep us informed!

Re: Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

I bought the engine from a breakers yard in Hull. The car had been crashed and i only bought the Engine block. No gearbox, Exhaust manifold, Turbo etc...

When I connect the Battery, the glow plug, injector and Keycode light come on. When I switch it on these 3 lights go off but return when the engine is switched off again!

Should I contact the breakers and get the original ECU?

Would a Fiat dealer be able to reset the ECU or anything?

Thanks for this help

Re: Re: Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

am i right in thinking you have only swapped engines?

if so, i'd have thought no reprogramming was needed as you're still using the original ecu etc.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

might be worth checking all of your connections to the sensors

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

Yes, just swapped the engine block, nothing else. Ive an auto spark supposed to coming either today or tomorrow as i think it is an electrical problem. Failing that il bring it to get a fault diagnostic.

Dont know what to do if that doesnt bring up anything or the spark cant sort it.

Maybe you have not set the timing on the pump correctly.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: New engine!!!!!!

i havent touched the timing yet but there is fuel coming through all injectors.
