Long story but have just had second hand engine (authenticated at 65k miles) put in my 2003 Ulysse.
Mechanic checked engine before install and did good job of getting the car back running - new clutch, new water pump, all the new fluids, so proper effort and was pleased to have the ol' bus back !

But the new set up has the car making an awful grunty, rumbling noise when accelerating through the gears - it sounds like a blown exhaust but it's not; it's never that easy, and it's difficult to pinpoint the noise when you have youtr head out the window at 20mph . . .

Anyhow, Independant (good, ex-Fiat) Mechanic has been all over it again to double check all bolts, hoses, gaskets etc etc are securely and correctly in place and found nothing. The engine idles perfectly and there is none of the sound when stationary.
The only suggestion coming back is that the noise is being produced through some form of resonance when the car is in motion and that a large, heavy weight bracket needs to be fitted to connect from the gearbox to the engine to stop this from happening.

Has any one heard of this problem and this solution or is there something else I should be considering and getting checked.

Any advice would be very gratefully received . . . I am so close yet so far from getting my beloved, albeit temperamental car back :)

Have you checked the rubber bushes on all the engine and gearbox mounts. Give it a real good shove with the engine off to see if they are perished as they may look fine on the o/s but could be ripped/shredded in the middle where it counts.
Too much movement usually indicates worn mounts.
