Hi I'm a newbie here. Have had my Punto Active 1.2 16v for almost ten years, first registered 24/10/03.

Got stuck in stationary traffic on m/way last weekend, temp gauge shot up, couldn't get across to inside lane to pull over for ages (all those other considerate road users), and ended up overheating with engine failure and a shed load if steam/smoke pouring out the bonnet. Upshot is: another car (not financially viable right now), or replacement engine.

Question: will the engine from an 04 version, same model descriptor fit my car?

I can source an 04 engine with less mileage (50k) than mine (77k) but need to know for sure that it would be compatible.

I know very little about the techie stuff, so thought I'd ask those in the know.

Cheers!

Barge - stick you hazards on and pull over i would
unless in traffic, in which case i'd do 1 of 2 things

Put the heater on Hot and blow it out the window
or
Switch off the engine

If the battery was healthy, i'd leave ignition on and blow the coolant in the heater matrix cool

But if the engine was still running then it might get away with a New HG and Skim along with finding the cause of the failure (water pump / leak / thermostat etc)

If you are fitting a 2nd hand engine, you might as well while its out and easy to work on, get a Fresh Cambelt - water pump - stat put on it, plugs etc, because its easiest to work on it there
I'd be tempted to pressure wash it clean as well tbh

as for engines fitting
Since your 10/03, i would have thought it would be a Mk2b - like the picture of the car in my sig
i dont think there are many changes between the mk2 and mk2b 16v engines either

Make sure the donor engine has what you have
Ie if you have a Cam Sensor and 2 lamdba sensors, the donor engine (if it comes with loom) has to have them too!

If say your engine has twin lambda sensors, and yours has only 1 - you will to use the loom from your engine with its ECU with the bare back engine you are going to fit

I have to fit S/H engine on my Punto MK2 due to major headgasket failure, ( Ziggy122 yes, it's hg failure after'all in a nasty way too!).

Though mine never overheated, just blew driving at 70mph down the M1 :(

Like my current engine it doesn't require an input of a camshaft sensor, whereas the engine i've sourced has a camshaft sensor, so I'm lucky to have the old engine with cam sensor, so I can either blank it or just leave it unplugged and I'll be all good.

But it's vice-versa here, as Ziggy says if your ECU requires an input from cam sensor then you need an engine with this, if it doesn't then you only an engine with either cam sensor or not like mine.

Benny you can just swap the Cam cover over i believe and it'll get rid of the sensor on the 8v :)

Then sell the cover and sensor for some wonga back you u?

I think tho 2003-2006 came with the Phase and double lambda setups, so i'd assume you could drop and fit :)

This engine is coming off a '02 MK2 was lucky to hear the engine run before handing over the money, not exactly low mileage but it's lower than my old engine.

My old engine got to 145k and this engine is 116k yeah you think why get one that high, well 145k is higher :D

But it sounded really healthy no knocks or anything apart from the annoying common rocker cover leak so oil all over the engine block, that's my job today to clean the new engine down :bang: and before fitting new gasket in there!

Hi ,
not to appear rude,
but have you had the engine looked at?,
does it still start/ run,

as stated you MAY get away with a HG and oil / coolant change - as moneys tight..,

my rellies 16v mk2,
overheated several times- over months - due to a US cooling fan,
and has still survived with no HG work - just a replacement fan..!!,

BUT if you are paying for somebody else to do the work then a guaranteed used engine may be a better -more cost-effective bet,

Id put my money with fingers on this one, especially if its only getting hot in traffic, would suggest the fans not coming on. Very common for them to seize, or become partially seized and pop the fuse, especially if its the original.

but as benny says, its anyone's guess without a proper look!

I did put the hot blower on to draw heat off the engine, but only cool air blew through. I had my hazards on for over 10 minutes and was using arm signals as well (polite ones) but nobody was prepared to let me across. I was not prepared to stop in the outside lane. I checked both my oil and fluid/coolant levels before I left home. However, we are moving away from my original query...

I forgot to mention that the tranmission is automatic. Doh!

I HAVE consulted a trusted professional about the damage sustained and a repair is not an option. The engine is running again after lead and plug changes and other remedial work, it doesn't sound great and I wouldn't feel safe or confident to drive as is.

Thank you for the advice so far - appreciated!
