Hi,

This is a great forum - thanks! I'm a newbie, so hope you dont mind if I get right down to it.

Was hoping you might be able to help make sense of the nonsense I was told and either put my mind at rest, or let me know whether I should complain to the agents after recently getting my car back.

Have a lot of questions, so if you dont mind, I'll put them in point form.

Car is 2000 Fiat Sienna 1.2 mpi el (like palio but sedan)

The exact same engine was not available anymore so a slightly different one had to be installed. Old engine had timing sensor in cam cover - main difference I can see is what I assume is the timing sensor is now placed outside the cam cover directly in front of a pully with teeth where the a/c p/s and alternator draw power off.

It looks like they may have replaced (or cleaned very well) the inlet manifold and a couple sensors. At the very least, the gaskets there are all new, same as the exhaust manifold with the addition of a new timing sensor type.

1) What is a tonic wheel - does it exist ? The agents had plenty trouble getting the correct part, said it was responsible for timing and the vehicle had poor performance. Eventually they stripped one off their own vehicles (apparently) which worked so they got the part no. off that and ordered the correct part. Then the performance was fine. Does that sound right so far ?
There was talk of a new loom, but the old one is still definately fitted.

2) When I got the car back, I drove it very gently allowing some time for it to run in a little and it does go well. Concern is a wire has been cut on the ECU - it is brown with a yellow stripe. I traced it down to the diff (or where the sideshafts meet) - what does that connector/switch down there do ? It has 3 wires, and now just the 2 outer ones are connected.

My dash warning lights are simple - just the important things - fuel injection light, handbrake, oil, low fuel light.

3) Are you not supposed to replace the ECU when you replace the engine with one of a different type ?

4) When I accelerate and hold the pedal steady on 2000rpm and let go, the revs come down to about 1400 stays there for about 5 secs and then goes back to idle. Same if I blip the accelerator - is that normal ? I've driven about 400km on the new engine and have done more that 3 cycles (cold to hot and back to cold) I do recall the old engine doing this on startup and then very seldomly - the ECU never reported any faults though.

5) Would removing the neg terminal on the battery resetting the ECU for it to map again lose any information they may have coded out and is it possible for them to program the computer to ignore a sensor ?

6) Does the gearbox have a low oil level sensor ? Assuming from what I can see, it appears that the diff and gearbox use the same oil - how important are the gators in as far as oil leaking is concerned? I see they have plastic cable ties and not the metal clamps.

7)Does anyone have an idea where the fuel filter is, or if I have one. I looked under the wheel arch and followed the filler pipe down to the tank. See 2 other pipes but they disappear around the top of the exhaust it seems. Nothing in the engine bay.

Your answers and advice greatly appreciated.

Ken.

Hi,

Thanks, but this engine isnt based on Punto or Bravo.

Its a simple 1.2mpi 8valve motor, and in south africa we have that engine available in sienna and palio, and of course the 16Valve in both too.

I managed to find out that the cut wire that goes from the ECU to the diff has something to do with idling. No idea what though, but apparantly many palios get the same wire cut if there are any problems with idling.

Do you know what controls the fan ? ie, where the switch is that determines whether the fan should go on at low speed or high speed. There is nothing on the radiator itself, but there is a plug in the engine with 3 wires on it.
On the cowling there is a weird looking thing that has two greyish wires on it, but it does not make contact with anything, so maybe just air passes over it. I'm asking because sometimes the low fan doesnt come on and it waits for the temp to get higher and the high speed kicks in. This behaviour without the aircon on. It used to normally always do low fan and switch it to high, and then back to low and then off. Its currently winter here, and this event occurred after 120km drive on open road at constant speed of 120km/h. Could the ECU have realised that I was driving on the freeway and possibly need time to realise I am now in city traffic or is there a faulty sensor somewhere.

After switching the engine off and back on, the low speed side works again.
Its got a new engine, new radiator and new radiator fan.

The fiat examiner says all ok, and that the fan comes on at 97 deg C which is apparently correct, but a little high if you ask me.

If anyone can shed some light, please let me know.

Thanks,
Ken.

A 1.2 MPi 8v motor sounds like the Punto 75 1242 engine to me. I'm not sure but the Bravo/a may well have had this 1242 fitted as well as the 16v version.

As to your question about temperature control for the fan, I suspect temperature readings are taken off the cylinder head somewhere and the fan controlled by the ECU. The temperature reading is used by the ECU to control fueling and timing as well, so I'd suspect that it would also control fan speed.

Your best bet is to ask in the Punto or Bravo/a sections as I don't know much about these later FIRE engines

sounds like you have an older engine fitted
its the older that have sensor at bottom near oil filter and newer on the top

disconnecting battery will set ecu back to basic setting until its finished learning, you wont loose no codes, except for radio

its phonic wheel not tonic wheel
