1.3 diesel engine - anyone any views as regards what I should expect?

I am driving an 8 year old Suzuki Carry that has impressed me as to reliability / performance / versatility - to the extent that one of them has to go and I am wondering which it should be

Well, after I'd decided to go for the dobbin I went to my local dealer to test drive. The only one they had was high roof & my first impression was - "it's like a f/kin TARDIS".
I'd have gone for the extra height but for the fact that the car was a few years old & I wanted 05 on (slightly longer) & my son didn't like the look of the higher roof.
It really felt cavernous.
Not sure if the 1.3 diseasel will have enough poke. Perhaps someone more savvy can comment?
