Hi all I have a Multipla and I need a new battery - I don't understand what CCA means and if I should go for a high number or not ! The current battery is 400 CCA and 45 Ahr and I can get one that is 630 CCA and 63 Ahr for £60 - is that good ?

Any advice appreciated thanks xx

No idea but stick your ref into euro car parts and at the moment you will get one for about 45 quid, I just had to pay 75 cos my battery dropped a cell and I couldn't wait or be sure that I'd make it to the shop

thanks - is it best to go for higher CCA ?
CCA means a power that battery give when you starting engine. For diesel this is very important in winter. For petrol this isn't that important, i didn't find any information in manual what is the best for your engine, but if you have a cold days where you live better take the 630cca

Thanks - she lives outside so I'll go for the high one xx

Only if the existing alternator is capable of fully charge the bigger battery.
Otherwise it´s a waste of money, and the lifespan of the new, bigger battery will be noticeable shorter.

CCA is cold cranking amps. Higher the better. As long as it's a battery that's listed for your car it will be fine. You only need a battery with high CCA if your powering a lot with ignition. That's why diesel's like high CCA as it's powering cold start relays and various valves and actuators.

We had huge [roblems with our battery, turns out the garage we had bought it from replaced the old one with one from a 1970s mini (i joke about the car it came from but the battery was tiny!).

We replaced it with a bosch silver s5 and haven't looked back. We shopped around and got a great deal. I found the same battery on ebay (not saying buy from here, nor am I a seller on ebay for car batteries...) but they do have comprehensive lists of supported cars:

+++ edit looks like I cant post urls +++ item number is 351003948054

Any hoo - can't rave enough about the battery. Happy shopping.

:)

The diesel Pla's are very forgiving of batteries, hardly any 'parasitic 'leakage in the design and for example hardly ever need heater plugs in the winter. My rule for 50 years with any car petrol or diesel has always been buy a replacement with +10 [ish] more CCA than the recommended size. You don't want too much more Ah than the alternator can deliver, Id choose a 60 / 600 rather than a 45 / 400 - but that's just my choice.

My current drive is a Voyager - not a Pla and I have a 80 / 800 battery. Chrysler for example recommend 600CCA for my 2.8 CRD and 600 CCA in the UK is a laughable and total waste of time in the cold weather, so don't always take what makers advise as fact. In your case using a diesel spec battery on a petrol should give you plenty of leeway

Best of luck in your choice angelajoy1961
