Hi all first post on the forum got a grande punto 1.4 active sport gone to start the car wont start just a constant grinding noise all electrics work fine etc am i right in thinking the starter motor.

Hi, and welcome to FF,
when you say "constant" is it there ONLY when you've got the key turned to "start"..??

if so it does look like the starter isn't engaging properly with the flywheel ring gear..,
not great..but there are several options,

easiest.. ( with engine off) put car in 2nd gear and push / pull the car to turn over the engine.. moving @ 30cm / 1 foot,
then get back in take out of gear (= Neutral)

depress clutch pedal, and turn key to start..,

let us know what happens now,

Charlie - Oxford

It constantly does it i can let go of the key and it carries on until i turn the ignition off.

There is a video on youtube of the identical problem it wont let me post the link.

Ive left the car at my parents house so cant try anything till tomorrow :-(

Were is the starter motor located i had a look under the bonnet and couldnt find it think i was looking too hard with being very annoyed.

Post the link you are talking about without http://www.
You are not a spam bot ok :p

Starter is on the back side of the engine (intake side) and near flywheel. Very hard to access anyway and no point maybe.

Do what varesecrazy told you, move the car with 2nd gear inside, then try to start again.
Also if you can, replace battery.

as the Youtube poster said , the ring gear was worn, and needed to be replaced,

the teeth are damaged ( in a least 1 area of it) = it's basically a flat disc "plate" with teeth on the outside that the starters teeth run against..,

try and shove it along(a few inches at a time) in gear again, =( trying to find a place with sound teeth)

may find a good spot, may all be U/S,
but you won't make it any worse..and at least you'll have it running..,

so is the cure to get a new ring gear.

probably..,
but If you're getting it done in a garage, it'll be pretty expensive:(

gearbox off, replace ring gear / flywheel,

then may as well replace clutch..,

as I said - see if you can find a good spot 1st,

towing will ALWAYS get it to fire..as would a push=but towing is almost safer..as you don't want unburnt fuel getting to the CAT, (n)
