Hi all, I am a newbie to the forum, and to car as well.

My Punto 60S broke down on my way from Kent to Southampton around 10 days ago, and was towed to a garage in Southampton (totally not drivable). The rescue service man diagnosed it a bad case of damaged head gasket.

This morning, I got a call from the garage saying basically I need another engine after they had a look. It was so overheated that even the pistone was not usable. It could cost over 1000 pounds to recondition it. Don't think I got an option. So I am looking for a replacement engine, which they will put on at a cost of 250 pounds.

So I am looking for a second-hand one. Did a bit search on the internet, found someone selling one but far away in Devon. Will try to check the garage in southeast london mentioned by someone.

Anyone can offer information on where to look for and how to check the condtions? Could one from some other models work?

Thanks very much.

i would look in the autotrader in the salvage and breakers bit at the back cos there are loads of places that offer reconditioned engines that mite help

If you want to keep your manifold and throttle body the same then stick to a spi engine (55/60) if you want a sporting or 75 engine then you will need to swap the injector rail....the list goes on.

Get the one on ebay ;)

Thanks all for ur info. It seems better than I worried.

Got a few quotes ranging from £150 to £300.
The ebay one seems the cheapest.but didn't find the sporting engine though. I guess fitting a porting or 75 engine as Lowtechguy said could be much more troublesome - don't want to spend too much on top of the quote from current garage (any idea?) .

Have been told the mileage and reg for one, 49K V reg. Going to check out others. What else should I ask about beside mileage and reg?

Thanks, gn.

Forget to put forward a question:
Only one of the selling guys asked me whther the car is 8v or 16v engine as the size of sth is different? Others do not seem to care. Is it an issue? I have no idea of it before call the garage to have a look for me.

What changes on the insurance premium do I expect after have the engined replaced? Will it go up even with a newer engine?
