We brought a fiat 500 1.3 multijet diesel a few weeks ago. While trying to sell our car the fiat has been sorn off road and left. Now our car is sold we went to start the fiat to which no turn over noise or clicking or anything. All lights on dash come up, radio and all electrics work fine. So don't think its a dead battery.

Any ideas? Is it immobiliser that has kicked in or does it sound like a dead battery? New car and don't know much about it.

Also as a side not rather than creating another post. When we purchased the car the dealer told us to start it you turn to ignition than turn it click back then start the car? If you try to start like any other car (wait for glow light to go off then continue the key forward) it won't click forward any further to start. Is this normal on deisels?

I would get the battery off and give it a good charge, there maybe enough power in it to run radio etc, but not a starter motor. Also check the terminals are not loose.

No loose terminals just tries to jump start it from my van my still nothing.

Took a video of the sounds it makes when trying to turn it over there is a clicking noise in the engine bay hope you can hear

Sorry to be so silly just changed battery over with next door but one battery as she has a fiat started 1st time :) yey

Happy again thanks for your help even if it was a pointless question

Yer scrap that just took the car out for half hour come back turned it off and tried starting it and nothing so I'll have a look at the straps again for earth but I checked earlier and all seemed good.

Take a black jump lead when it's not starting and connect it between the battery ground and a large piece of metal on the engine it's self (there are some lifting hooks which are a good point or the engine mount on the left) then start it.

The earth will "look" absolutely fine but the corrosion is inside the insulation so can't be seen, and the symptoms you describe are 100% what is expected with this problem.

All the electrics appear to work normally and the battery is in good health but the wiring is just not in good enough condition to let enough juice flow to the starter motor

sounds like could need a new battery to me

Problem is still persisting. Its intermittent as we can start the car fine a few times (in morning going to work, maybe stop at shop so start it there) but there is the occasion it won't start.

Leave it 5-10mins and it will start I have found a video on YouTube with the exact same problem although no answers to what it was but is a better video than what I can take. Please can you watch it and advise me if it could be starter motor? Thanks [ame]https://youtu.be/lxZ2HvGM1lE[/ame]

Yes you mean by putting a jump lead from negative and the other end touching onto the engine metal somewhere?

I can try it again just encase I didn't do it correctly its just a case of having to wait for it to play up again so I can try it.

Playing around with jump leads on a car with a known electrical problem is a good way of permanently damaging some expensive electronic components.

The suggestion is connect the earth of the battery to the metal of the engine, no one is suggesting "playing around" and it is not something that can cause any electrical damage. Don't be so melodramatic this is a common problem on other fiat models especially the 1.3 diesel because of the location of the earth on the gearbox, and is easily and inexpensive my fixed once confirmed.

If the video shown is the same problem the OP is saying, it isn't the battery.
I reckon it's a control problem. It's not even the starter motor.

If it starts sometimes but not others, it's an intermittent problem of course.

Multiecuscan should show an error.

Regards,
Mick.

Same problem on my punto

http://youtu.be/3a48jYCAAgY

And no you generally won't get any fault codes
I'm no expert. Let's get this straight first of all. :)

Your Punto fault on your video looks VERY different to the 500 fault shown on the other video. Your's does indeed look like a high resistance contact in the starter motor circuit.

The 500 looks as if there's an alarm and a control error. There's also a beep or two. Lots of flashing lights. Also, sometimes it's fine and other times it's not fine. This isn't a bad connection scenario.

Meanwhile, I reckon our OP needs to check all his battery connections first, and then the dog will see the rabbit.

Thanks,
Mick.
