I've taken the airbag out and am faced with a big nut in the centre of the wheel with a metal clamp around it, do i need to force back the lugs on the clamp and get to the nut (look awkward if not impossible) or do I need a really big socket (22mm?) and turn the clamp with the nut?

prise of the locking washer and get the socket set onit
but make sure the s / wheel and wheels are straight

carefully with a screwdriver or something similar, just flaten it so the nut will turn

Pete

Undo the nut then put it back on 3or4 threads then you can pull
on the steering wheel with out it hitting you in the face
when it comes off

Good tip,

ran out of light, going to have a go tomorrow.

VERY GOOD TIP FROM TREV!!!lol... (speaking from experiance!)

Jay, you will need to not only flatten the lugs, but you will also need to break them off. You will find that there are two overriding nuts. You will not be able to undo the second one if you dont break them off.
To undo the nuts, get yourself the x shaped nut loosener (or whatever you call them) and use the largest size. You will need put in some strength for the job. Make sure that when putting back you tighten with all your strength.
