I've got an uno FIRE 1100 1992 model - 3 door.
I've got a bit of an issue. I've got this nasty rattle on my car. Worsens when I go up hill or accel. Dunno if this is related but I sumtimes cant get gears - they grind - esp reverse! I struggle @ times to get into 1st and 5th. And I dont think it has got anything to do with me being a female driver either!! I've had a new clutch kit put in and it has not made any change.

Dunno if this info will help: Also noticed that there's a faint grinding sound and if I put the clutch in it's quieter. Sum1 was mumbling bout a bearing in the flywheel.

Any ideas!!?? before i drive the car off the cliff! I dont know what else cud possibly go wrong with it!

Any info will be greatly appreciated!! THankz

Check gearbox oil, if boot has split there will be no oil in gearbox, common problem

I think the bearing they talk about is the input shaft bearing in the gearbox (a common failure). When it goes it lets lots of oil out. Its a pain to replace but the part is cheap.

When 'they' put in a new clutch, they should have refilled the gearbox with oil... maybe this did not happen. Alternatively as jjhepburn points out, the input shaft bearing (first bearing in the gearbox) is a common culprit, but with the symptom of the gearchanging being difficult, it makes me suspect the oil.

Gearbox seems 2b ok. I took my car to the Fiat shop and mechanic had a quick look at it. He set the timing on the car and the rattle was almost completely gone for all of 4 days and now its back with a vengeance. My vacuum thing in front is kaput so do u think that could make a difference? He did say that he thinks its the tensioner bearing but i dont think that is possible becoz i bought a new tensioner. Like i said the rattle is only worse when i accelerate and go uphill!!?

Also do u think it could have something to do with the master cylinder/slave cylinder??

I dont think the rattling and gearbox issues are related. Gear change problems will be maladjusted clutch cable and/or lack of oil. It could also be a faulty pressure plate and may need a repalcement clutch. if the clutch is new, take it back and get it fixed under warranty.
Rattling could be what is called "pinking". I presume the rattling increases if you put the engine under load, like going up hill or low 4th gear speed and opening the throttle. Sounds like the timing is out [too advanced] or the head needs looking at as it could be carboned up, and what happens is you get little explosions in the head, that causes the sound. try using premium fuel or a octane booster. If the sound stops, you need the timing looked at or the head decarbonising.

Andy.

How does 1 decarbonise the head? I went and bought the vacuum thingy me-bob so i'll put it in and check. This morning tho it was much quieter... verry verry strange!
