I just can't get to grips with vehicle names. Never have.....

But there seems to be something about Panda's.

I really don't want to change the habit of a lifetime but I find myself struggling to resist.

I was discussing this very topic with PandaSport today I think I may know why it becomes De-rigour on this forum............

It's because people have so many Bl**dy cars that giving them a name is the only chance of distinguishing one from another..

Don't make me do it................ I think I have a name for the Terra van.........

ahh yes. i have had the same issue myself.

to name a car you need to first figure out if its male or female. you soon figure out what it is when you work on it and drive it.

ill tell you a bit of a story with Talon,
the name for Talon came about because of a few things. its 4wd, its green, i kinda have a thing for dragons, and it has these funny .. "ways". ways that i cant explain that differ from anything else. oh and if you catch him right.. man he really snarls at you.. and the "misbehaving" things too...
talon definitely has the temperament that would be expected of a dragon.
My original name for him was going to be "Talos" the name of the dragon god in the Elder Scrolls games. however not wanting to nick the name and the fact "this dragon seemed to have claws", Talon was the name i chose...

the Marbella is still unnamed.
i keep bugging Alex @420 to name it. he does not want to give it a male name as he does not want to seem "car gay". (<check that out.. funny as hell)

i am not sure about the fallout project. its not named.
this one could be female.. *could* i have not had any hints to its gender yet however.
i know that it is a fighter heart wise though!
i think it has a stronger engine than Talon.. hmm, whatever. it has got some real fire in it. hmm... hopefully reborn from the fire of the gas welder... hmmm........

Hah! I was talking with my friend about your habbit of giving humane names to the cars. It is not a common practice here in Poland, but having more than a one car gives an opportunity to distinguish them by giving some "names". So my cars are:

panda is simply "panda" or "trekking"{ very sophisticated, I know:p}

regata 2000 is "sedici" , comes from "sedicivalvole" 16 valves of its engine{ in the mid 80's 16 valve heads were something new in the mass produced cars, so the manufacturers indicated the "top" engine versions with proper "16v" badge. }

regata Diesel is simply "diesel"{again very imaginative:D}

marbella is "pandabella"

130 coupe is "the piano", because it is big and heavy like the piano and has colour of the pianos key.

It is probably an extremely good thing that I don't have a Terra van (and probably never will) as I would call it Dactyl.

No, I would, seriously - I think it sounds quite good as a stand alone name (very Dr Who monster), and think of the groans when anyone can't work it out & you have to explain it's the Terra Dactyl :D

No? Only me then....... ;)

Never had a name for any vehicle I owned for 47 years......then I started the panda collection.

Not sure what it is (and it goes against my nature) but they just seem to suit naming. It's not even that hard to work out a suitable name...now there has got to be a reason for that.

I never thought myself for naming a car, my Punto was always just 'the Punto'

I often refer to the Panda as 'the Panda' but I also refer to 'it' as 'she' often.

Vern named her after his daughter and the model, Charmaine + Mania model = Charmania. Taking this and the colour of the car I twisted it on my favourite Pokemon (which the first time I got in a Panda as a young child when I mostly played Pokemon) Charmanda, thus the name was given.

I think cars can have names but I think there is often a specific reason or reference for it to really stick.

Although saying that, my Mum had a 1999 Vauxhall Corsa, I never particularly liked it as a car but it strangely had some form of character about it, it was metallic purpley/blue and its numberplate ended in EGN, so we called it... him, Eeegan, he was always called that right up until we sold him.

I always thought the car was a girl if driven by a man and a man if driven by a woman.

My Seicento was Fifi, the wifes Punto she called Jimmy (shes Sri Lankan but took to the naming game straight away), but somehow my Rover got called George (said in a funny way that I can't type) under pressure to name it by my child. So I must be car bi-sexual if Dragon Mans link is anything to go by (George doesn't have a lady boy under the dash though). A small Chinese nail technician would be nice as she would fit in the glove box lol

Mine all seem to end up male, but some were named before I bought them. Italian cars should mainly be fiery red blooded males I think - even the little ones have that sort of spirit.

Even Pinky is male - after great debate (including the one about can cars even have a gender), he is definitely a he but in touch with his softer side :D

Did anyone notice I resisted making comments about the glove box being easier to get into as the lid is presumably long since broken? :tempt:

Cars are mostly female, I think... -- although not for the reasons cited in John's video!

Priscilla came from the film; Betty (Oslo Gra(y)ble) was already named. The homewardette named Pippin -- which actually suits him...! -- and Hal just seems butch with his big (I believe) engine... (I just hope he's as all-conquering as the original Henry V...). Pandora was named by Mrs h, after one of her star nursery pupils...! :)

If you have watched the video, then enough said *cough, cough*

Oh Palio, my box is intact and fully functioning (so to speak) as is almost everything else on the 420. I will (when fixed) turn up to a Fiat meet in it so you can stand back and admire the smooth curves which are somewhat lacking on your box on wheels ;)

ha ha, funny thing... lol
well previous to The Pandas that began to 'arrive' in 2005 I only named motor caravans - Doris (Bedford CF with lift-up roof), Mable (early Bedford Bedouin) and another mk1 CF Glendale, begging the name Glenda... Then the Ducato 1.3 cab came along financed in part with a mortgage change from Legal and General (L&G) which gave rise to 'Ellen... Ellen Gee to be precise lol
As longer old-time posters here may remember the 1st Panda came with the intention of becoming a towed car - so the 1st to come became 'Ellen 'A' then the CLX arrived to become 'Ellen 'B'... when the 4x4 came along it started to get complicated...
So, in short, all mine are girls named after their previous owners (y)
In homage to them all - they all came as 'runner or spares' :p ... though to be fair Rachel came with about a month's MOT :D (but is worse condition than the other 2... where's Dragon Man..?)

I think a lot of Panda's end up being male for some reason, Obviously Char' is one of few female Panda's but then again she has got around a bit....

I have never named any of my cars as I was never really interested in cars. They were just a means to get from a to b and back again. Then I met Vernon! Our cars have to have names otherwise we would always be talking at cross purposes! Strangely Vernon's Blue CLX has never had a name. Any suggestions? I want to call our Ford Popular Poppy but Vernon's not convinced. We tend to refer to it as Yuk because that is its number plate not because we don't like it!

Naming cars makes it easier to swear about them without sounding like a sadist.

A few years ago there was an insurance study that found people who named their cars were statistically less likely to make a claim due to the additional emotional attachment. When getting a quote if you mentioned the vehicle had a name you could get as much as 10% off the policy compared to not mentioning it. I think insurers are on to it now and realised people have been saying their cars or bikes have names for the discount and nothing more so it appears to have stopped.

I got thinking about the car gender thing and realized I've made a grave error with GerTie (the GTie) - not hard to work out that one but it's definitely a male car, so...

GerTie, short for Gertrude, Gertrude Lawrence, turns into new name for GerTie...

Laurence (y)

or just GT.

You have to imagine talking about it, like in my head here...:

Off into town?

Yes

Which car you taking, Fizzle, Twizzle or THE GT ?

THE GT

Very Gene Hunt :p

How about YukPopski for the ford popular! I believe there is a new law coming out in this country that if you have 4 or more cars than at least 25% of them have to have a foreign name. And at least 50% of them have to be female :D

I told my wife in named my panda Chi Chi and she told me her car is called 'Champion'. I asked why. She sang 'Champion the wonder Colt'. It's a Mitsubishi Colt 59 plate in blue. :D
