I've had the smell of fuel for a few days now, I had thought that maybe when I pushed the car hard there was a leak in the carb area... but i was wrong.

after leaving a petrol station forecourt and heading towards the motorway people were telling me I was losing fuel. So i found a place to pull over and have a look. torrential fuel leak from the front of the petrol tank area... which was falling into the path of the rear wheel.

So my first question is this a common fault? second question is there a probably cause?... and finally how is the fuel tank on a Tipo secured?

Also collected Sumplug's 16v today... I shall be asking many questions about plugging hoses into engines as it has quite a lot fo things hanging loose.

I'll post pics once i get them off my brothers camera, I have left the car in 3 stages of cleaning. the rear nearside has still got moss on it, and the offside front has been t-cut.

Hey Tony,
Oh my god, Glad you are ok and still in one piece mate, thats real bad....

The fuel tank is a fairly easy job to do mate, there are three 13mm bolts securing the petrol tank straps underneath and a 13mm bolt inside the rear wheel arch attatched to the filler neck which goes to the car body, (this will be seized in)..
Oh you need to disconnect all the hoses and wiring from the top of the tank first this is done by removing the black circular plate in the boot floor.....

Nice to hear Sumplugs car has finally gone to a good home and not the scrappy,

well i had a look under the car today... turns out it was an easy fix... the return fuel/over flow hose had come loose at the offside top... so secured it back to where it had been...

I can only think that because of it's proximity to the rear anti-roll bar that it gets nudged and over time works free. or maybe i just got lucky.

well after that, i was slightly happier and bought the car an air freshner... after the smell of petrol has dissappeared the smell of old tabacco is back with avengence.

Well, like all responsible first time fathers to be... I went out and bought a potential money pit that requires a lot of time just to get on the road :)

the time constraints aren't the real issue, however the budget is £0 or as near as. That said I will be doing as much as i can and hopefully many of the blanks will be filled by members here. I'll probably start a blog on the forum just so people can keep track. I'll be binge mechanikin for a few months... then it will be put on hold for a few more months.
