Have just bought a stunning Punto 1.2 2001 with a genuine 25000 on the clock and it's immaculate inside and out. We're going to use it (a) to tow behind our TAG-axle Autotrail motorhome (coachbuilt, based on a 2003 Fiat 2.8 cab unit) and (b) so that my partner can learn to drive a car with gears as she only has an 'automatic' licence currently.
The Punto is still on its original tyres so I'm having new ones fitted on Thursday morning as there's some sidewall cracking in evidence and I don't want a blow-out when the car's on its a-frame behind the motorhome! Actually, the Punto has done more miles than the motorhome which, when we bought it 18 months ago, had only done 16,000 miles.
So, having never owned a FIAT before (in nearly 50 years of motoring) I now have two!
Incidentally, the Punto has had one new cam belt (around 7 years ago) so what do people think I should do? It's due for its MOT in October, and my inclination is to change it, and the waterpump again, when it's being serviced, pre-MOT. Am I being daft?
When I picked-up the Punto, it hadn't been driven for a while, so I filled up with premium Shell unleaded, did some 'fettling' around the engine bay and it now drives like a different car. Brilliant - and it certainly doesn't feel like it's 12 years old. Immaculate and unmarked are two words that spring to mind...
I hope that it gives me quite a few years good, reliable service - but is there anything that I should watch out for? You guys know far more than I'll ever do. And thanks for letting me join your forum...I'm sure I'll enjoy it. And now back to the Haynes manual...!
