Technical my puntos ignition driving me crazy, or not at the case maybe!

hi all I hope i can all pick your brains. I shall explain this in lehmans terms as i'm not very technical.
well my 1997 fiat punto's steering wheel somehow got stuck on the steering lock. I couldnt get it off so called the RAC and he basically dismantaled my ignition put my key somewhere and started the car for me to get home. he said i need a new ignition barrel with key. so i got one off of eBay BUT my dad cant get the replcement ignition into the housing.
does this make sense? i can try and put pics up if needed. I would so appreciate any help as i really need my car back on the road as I am due to start work next week after having 10 months off on maternity leave.

i had to use a pic off of the internet which funnily enough was off of here but it is exactly the same lol the ignition bit with key, we cant seem to get into the housing. we can ge the little clip down but then it wont go in any further. rather annoying

I've never done one of these, but I think you have to turn the key to a particular position on the lock for the barrel to go all the way in.

my dad has sat and fiddled with it for hours. he said the inside pin is stopping it from going all the way in I think?

ha! success!!! my dad has done it! something to do with the bit o the steering lock he had to press down to get it in! doh!

well we got it in the housing the black thingy and my dad is going to fit it to the car tomorrow. I assume the chip from my red key will have to be put in the key that comes with the new ignition or taped somewhere for it to work. The RAC man taped my key somewhere and I had to drive in home with out stalling it!
