Help me out here please if you can. My car suddenly cluncked at 60 mph and was continually cluncking as i pulled over. Thae sound was coming from the air intake on my 1.4 bravo and stops when i take off the fourth spark plug lead any ideas what this could be. There is still compression abd runs badly with the lead off if this is any help. Cheers for the input people xx

Lol, there is no reason why your leads could cause a clunking noise, especially if it is coming from the air intake.

ok lets ignore the lack of constructive help and get they guy some real possibilities here :)

perosnally i'm clueless (what's new :p ) but just bumping this for you

Jay, your not useless... im sure there is at least one use for you... :S:p

as for your problem Jakki, other than the 'clunk' are there any other symptoms, does the engine run badly from when it started? does the noise spped up when you rev the engine? does it only do it while driving and using the gears or...?

when you remove the ht lead from no4 cyl, you say the clunk goes but the engine runs rough, correct?

the more info you can give us the better, how many miles, how often is it serviced

lol sorry for tha dumb message yesterday guys. It started with a ticking sound which over a period of a month got progressively louder. It sounded like an old fiesta if you can imagin :) Then as mentioed before it suddenly cluncked and was cluncking regularly. I pulled over poped the bonnet and there was a popping noise coming from the air intake which has a KnN fitted directly to the thingy on top of the engine. I had my brother take a looksy and he said that when he took the 4th spark plug lead of on the 4th cylinder it stopped poping but ran badly. So he doesn't know and thinks ity might be something to do with the ecu.

bout two years ago :( bought it from this lad who used to come on here and 8 weeks later its done this

ouch

first thing i would do if the clunking etc stopped when removing a lead is to replace the leads and plugs. it could be this, but then again it may not be. the 1.4 needs religious servicing to keep it at its best

it may be awkward, but can you explain the clunking?

or if possible, record the sound and either post it here or email it to me?

Like a plugh with a bit of a pop in it lol yeah ill try get a recording of it tomorrow. But is definatly an airy sound if that makes any sense.

in that case replace the plugs and leads, shoudnt cost you too much and hopefully will cure the problem

if needs be you can get me [email protected] (email or msn as im not always on here)

sounds from the description that the inlet valve is not seating properly (broken valve spring?) and the combustion is going through the inlet,Taking off the plug stops the "clunking". Check by having a compression test on the number 4 pot

He says there is still copression i dont know what that eans but my brother told e to write it in my post as above :)))xx

compression means that you have no leaks in the engine (holes or cracks in that cylinder) can you ask your brother what the compression reading he got was across all 4 cylinders for me please?
