Doblo My beautiful Doblo!

Introduction

Hello ladies and gents ,

My name is Alexandru and I would love to introduce my beautiful and very well maintained Fiat Doblo Malibu 2003 1.9l. It was bought new by my parents years back. It has 230000 km on the clock. It's a brilliant car and helped me a lot as I live in a country side of Romania.

Enjoy!
Looks like a Renault 16 to me.;););)
Joking apart I have had around 6 Fiat Doblos over the years including two at present, none as good looking as yours, however they are very practical vehicles, much under rated.:)
Many thanks sir. Indeed, its much under rated . Its looking so good because my mom really looked after it . I can say that since 2021 I'm fully owner of this car lol. Since 2021 , Ive managed to do almost 60000 km ( 35k miles ) , I did few long trips with it ( Ireland( that pic with the renault was taken on the ferry, Rosslar-Cherbourg) , France, Italy, Turkey, Holland ) , never let me down .

Could you tell me what model.of doblo you own now ? Honestly, I would like to sell my doblo, and get a newer model. I want a petrol.one, and i cant decide between 1.4l vs 1.4l Turbo? What would you recommend? I heard that these 1.4 l engines are very reliable.

Many thanks.

Currently I have two 1.6 MJs both 2010, I also have a Vauxhall Combo 1.3MJ (badge engineered Doblo), I much prefer the power of the 1.6MJs and also the six speed gearboxes. One of the 1.6s is a Maxi Van, the other is a sort of Combo with the seats in the rear and windows in the doors, in fairness I bought that one cheap for spares and it has already paid for it's self.
I can't comment re the later petrol versions as I prefer the economy of the 1.6 diesels and the pulling power on hills compared with petrol or the 1.3 MJ diesel.
I would have thought the 1.4 non turbo petrol,if it comes with a six speed box should give enough power and yet quieter motorway running in sixth gear when required.
I expect others on Forum will be able to give more specific advice on the petrol versions.:)
I would say if your current one is the 1868cc non turbo Doblo with the Lucas Epic injector pump, I had one of those in a 2003 Doblo van and found it to be much less powerful and also poor on fuel economy when compared with the petrol Peugeot Partner 1.6 I had replaced it with, so the next one I got was a 2005 1.9JTD 7 seater Doblo and even with over 220,000 miles it had plenty of power and was good on fuel, it only broke down once and that was a crank shaft position sensor, once it cooled down ten minutes later I was able to complete my journey home, diagnose the fault and fit new sensor.:)

Many thanks for infos mate. Hopefully someone will give me more tips regarding petrol engines. I'm aware that the fuel consumption will be higher ( around 7l/100km) , that's why im planning to install a LPG system on it. The main reason why I wouldn't get a diesel again is because I usually do short trips.

Many thanks.

LPG is less popular in this Country, I agree re small modern diesels and short trips, the emission controls cause lots of issues.
For this reason one of my daughters has gone to a Petrol Fiat Punto Evo 1.2, her twin prefers a 2.0 litre diesel still!:) She started on a 1.7 Punto diesel, couldn't get on with petrol cars so then went 1.9 diesel VW Golf GTi 130hp then a VW Tiguan 2.0 diesel 140hp , tried a VW Golf 1.6 90hp diesel and is now using an old Skoda Scout 4x4 2.0 140hp diesel that used to be mine.:)

From memory, the last Fiat based 1.4 is more than adequate, turbo more so, but you do feel it if your carrying weight…the latest one is a PSA product that are also pretty competent but a bit flimsy, think they make them out of tin foil rather than tin cans

The 1.4 suits the smaller Qubo, based on a punto floorpan, you feel the extra height on corners, but then, if you’re used to the doblos height, it shouldn’t trouble you
Yes, I'm used to doblo height. I do drive very cautious anyway. I found some nice doblos in Germany, around 10k euro, with 1.4l Turbo engine. I still didn't decide if if I should choose 1.4l Turbo or not. I'm thinking that the Turbo one may be more complicated and more expensive to maintain , but also I know that a Turbo system wont fail so soon. The 1.4 l without a Turbo it's a very simple engine but I won't have power at all. I'm still thinking , hopefully someone will enlighten me . Many thanks for your answer.

Morning sir,

I'm bothering you again with some silly questions. What can you tell me about 1.6 diesel engine ? I found few doblos in Germany, 1.6 diesel , 90 hp, with 120k km on the clock ?. What are the common issues with this engine ? Do you think that 120k km it's a lot for this engine ? Many thanks.

That is not an excessive mileage/kilometers etc. but it always depends on the previous owners driving and servicing as with any vehicle.
One of mine has around 110,000 miles, the one I bought for spares is around 180,000 miles and does show it;) that one was used by a local courier/delivery driver and well abused.
The 1.6 MJ Doblo I use is fine now, but when I got it there was oil in the coolant tank which the previous owner thought to be a head gasket issue, on inspection I found it was a leaking oil cooler on the oil filter assembly, a bit of a fiddle but sorted with new parts, one problem was getting the residue of oil out of the coolant tank etc. I also fitted new heater plugs as a warning came up on dash board, no problem starting as weather always mild where I live, job was easy so no problem there.
I changed the gear cables due to a bit of slack but understand gear cable can break on many modern cars, cost around £100 and probably took around an hour to fit as you have to support car on stands and remove the heat shield over the exhaust, plus the covers around the gear stick etc.
Apart from that I am a firm believer in oil changes when I see the oil is discoloured which is before manufacturers specification suggests.

Hello Alexendru, congrats on your Doblo 🤜 Don't hurry to "uprade" to a much newer model, you could end up being sorry. An old friend of mine warn me also not to sell my 1.9jtd doblo but I didn't listen and now I am already sorry. If you can aford it, keep your old doblo until you get a few miles on your new one and decide after that. Older models got something special about them, they get under your skin 😁

I agree , my 05 1.9JTD was the most reliable and easier to repair, unfortunately rust started and that only goes one way.:(

Hi,
Im totally agree with you, but what you saying it's applicable to all cars these days. Old cars are the best that's why I love the saying : Old is Gold ! . Unfortunately, our government will introduce more taxes for old cars. It's unfortunate 😕 but this is it. We need to move on . How bad the new models could be ? I'm talking about 2018-2019. I read a lot of reviews about 1.4 l T-Jet , most of the owners are quiet happy with this engine , and is also known to be good when it comes to reliability. Cheers 🍻
