General My Abarth on a race track

General My Abarth on a race track

Ok, i've done some investigating in the Fiat manual but i need some help from someone who knows a bit more about Fiat electronics;

There are two fuses that take care of the ABS/ASR/ESP which are a deffinate no no to take out. My Fiat manual says they are "centralitas" which according to the dictionary means switchboard. So there are two switchboards which look after these three functions but also a third fuse that says "ESP system sensor"; does this mean that if i take this one out the esp will stop working??? If so, is there anyway of fitting an switch to a fuse so it can be turned on and off?? (it would be wonderful if i could get the last button next to the gear stick (the one for "auto" in selespeeds) to turn off my esp!!!!

Sorry i'm making such a big deal of this but my ESP gives me a lot of trouble even when i'm not going very fast so i'd love to be able to turn it off!!!!

Thanks a bunch (y)

@Slovac - Echoing my friend Ben R - "Get a Strutbrace" that will work wonders with your steering and helps the handling too - even if you can't lower the car. In your case for track use you might well benefit from a rear Strutbrace too. The front one over here is just £60.98 for the Abarth - very simple to fit too.

Generally not worth it unless you replace the front arm bushes with poly rather than rubber. The flexing in your car body is nowhere near as much as there can be within the rubber bush on your suspension. A strut brace will make a pretty item for inside the engine bay though - although it might get in the way of servicing down behind the engine.

www.powerflex.co.uk are one of the biggest names in poly suspension bushes.

Glad you enjoyed your trackday. I'll come and help out with your drive if you pay for my petrol there in Tipo and entry to the track. Its only 6238 miles @ 30mpg :D

Ok, i've looked through the manual again and found some problems that i hadn't spotted; one of the switchboards that controls the ESP, ASR and ABS is the same fuse that controls the "esp System sensor" and "turn angle sensor?", the other switchboard which controls ESP, ASR and ABS is a "MAXI-FUSE" while the first is a regular 7,5A fuse.

So, if i take the 7,5A fuse out will the Abs stop working?? Is the turn angle sensor important????

A strutbrace is actaully a very good idea... and I know somebody who makes them for the race cars over here... I will have to go pay him a visit :chin:
Thanks for the idea (y) Don't know why I didn't think of that...

So does anybody know how one could turn th esp off??? Maybe there's a fuse just for ESP?? maybe a switch can be fitted somewhere???
I tried figuring it out... even spoke to the guys who race them on the track here in SA in the nationals. (http://www.fiat.co.za/racing/)
There is no fuse you can just yank out according to the racecar mechanic it's controlled by the ECU, so you have to bypass this with another ECU that you fit to the car alongside the original. (Well, that's how they got around it...)

Hey Slovac, sounds like loads of fun!!!

Do you know if they do anything like that up here at Kyalami/Zwartkops? I have been around Kyalami and Zwartkops for a couple of launches (Golf 5, Punto, BMW 1) so I would love to go around in the Stilo for comparison!

When I went on the skidpan with the Audi A4 1.8T, there was a button for disabling ESP, but they just used to pull out of a fuse for disabling ABS. I am sure the same could be done in the Stilo for ESP... although it might disable ABS too... :D

They have open days at Zwartkops every so often... not sure about Kyalami, but they might have.

Check out http://www.zwartkops.co.za/ there might be something on the site. O mail [email protected]

Don't be an idiot like me... take somebody with you that can take some pictures of you :p

The turn angle sensor is used by the ESP and EBD as far as I know... but as I said above: the guys who race the Stilo Abarth over here had to fit an extra ECU to override the ESP. Apparently the Stilo ECU is a real monster and has a coupl eof failsafes built in. Great for safety... cr#p for racetrack.

So how much does an extra ECU cost???? Does it give any problems???

As far as I know it's an after market ECU... so your warrantee would be null and void if you fit it. Keep in mind this was done to an Abarth used to race with and they have sponsors... so I would think that the cost would not be a problem for them. They would also have all the equipment and know-how to program the ECU... so I wouldn't try fitting one of these to a road car.
When I posted the question of 'How to disable the ESP' a while ago on FF... it did not seem like anybody on here have been successfull in disabling it.
Personally, I've given up trying to find a way to disable the ESP.
Maybe one of the guys on here that work on Fiats can enlighten us... (NumanR?)

No idea about the ESP etc I'm afraid, but on the Coupe a strutbrace makes a decent difference to the handling of the car. If you're suffering brake fade, then some fast-road pads are in order, plus a change of brake fluid to make sure you don't boil it.
£7 for a whole day is pretty good. That's the cost of one lap of the Nurburgring. Also, the Nurburgring has practically no run-off areas, just to keep you on your toes that little bit more.

I changed the brakefluid yesterday... for exactly the reason you mentioned: it was boiling on Sunday. I wasn't sure if the breakfluid would last long after it boiled a couple of times, so just to be safe, I drained off the old oil and replaced it.

I would love to go around Nurburgring! It's great on the playstation... so it must be even greater in real life (y)

Once the brake fluid has boiled, it's knackered, and should be changed.
I've never been round the Nurburgring on the PlayStation! Wish I had - would have meant I could have pushed a bit harder from the start.
