my 1.4sx (can i do nothing with it?)

Hey there if any one could give me any help it'd be well appreciated.

Av just bought a 1.4 sx and am wanting to know what i can do to the engine but from readig reviews and forums it seems that not mch can be done to the 1.4

is this true?
wud i have bin better of buying a 1.2?

I'm afraid that the 1.4 is the black sheep of the bunch, the 1.2 is just as quick, more economical, and more tuneable...

The 1.4 with a kent cam and a superchip will put out about 100BHP. Its ALOT more tuneable than the 1.2.

The MPG does not get better though

I've seen some strange comments about the engine range.

So far I've heard that a 1.2 is quicker than a 1.4, a 1.6 is quicker than a 1.8. Obviously the 2.0 is the daddy but what is going on with the rest of them.

Most people would assume bigger engine = faster car

Is it more to do with the different gear boxes and why does more power not make the car quicker both bottom and top end??

Lee, thats cos the 1.4 went out of production 5 years ago.

Hmm.. looks like kent and piper no longer do a camshaft for the 1.4. Sods! Might be worth phoning them as they might still do you a regrind.

Just ring piper or kent and see if they will regrind the current cam to their profile.

Its not really custom. Designing your own cams is a hit and miss thing

The 1.2 has 82bhp standard (And is 16 valve)
The 1.4 has 80bhp standard (And is 12 valve)

That's mainly why the 1.2 is quicker.

The 1.6 apparently has dodgy gear ratio's, so when you get upto the higher rev range, it just takes off and will give the 1.8HLX a run for it's money. Possibly quicker if tuned

the 2.0 is the daddy, and will leave basically everything standing, except quad turbo 6.9 liter V12 twin engined novas.

Now now Ian, you know the 1.2 is not better than the 1.4 just cos its 16 valve

The 1.6 does not have dodgey gear ratios, however Fiat did fit a different final drive on later 1.6 so they do 80MPH at 3500rpm rather than 4000.

The fact the 1.6 launches itself at 3500rpm is down to engine design and the fact its 16 valve.

My 1.6 auto brava is only doing 3000rpm at 80mph. At 90mph it's 3500rpm and at 100mph it sit's at 4,000 rpm. That's quite high gearing for a 1.6 (25mph per 1000rpm). Just sat at the ton all the way back from the NEC Birmingham. Been to the Autosport show.Load of crap

thing with my MK2 1.6 is i rarely use fifth gear at all. fifth gear seems to be a pure ecomy gear, put your foot down in fifth and nothing will happen it will just sit there at any speed. also the fact that i can reach 120 in forth, but thats another matter

i have a 1.2 and y friend has a 1.4 and he has been in both cars and has said and everyone else who has been in both of them has said mine is much quicker of the mark and faster. i have beaten a few bigger cars of the mark which surprised me and them.

I have a 1.6 16v. My mate EJ has a 1.8 HLX. We both have the same mods.

Remus Backbox, Evolution (Tiger) De-Cat pipes, Pipercross Induction kits and the same amount of weight in ICE. He struggles to keep up with me.

My car has gone quicker than that in fifth. My mates call me a taxi driver cos i'm always the quickest to get to fifth. I just dont like pushing my car too much, well i feel like i'm pushing it anyway.
