I noticed the other day that a tail lamp had gone, so I picked up another bulb, skinned three knuckles getting the bulb carrier out and popped it in.

No light.

So I took the one out of the other side (that was working) and put it in the dud side, to see if it was maybe just the connection to the carrier. No light. So, thinking I might just need to scrub up the connectors, I put the working one back on its side. Now that doesn't work either - I have no tail lights.

Any hints, tips, general guidance or sympathy much appreciated!

First check the centre pin in the bulb holder is not depressed too far or it won't make contact with the bulb. With the lights off, gently pull it up from the bulb holder until you are certain the bulbs centre pin is touching it. Are the tail lights on seperate fuses, one for each side? If so, change the fuse even if the one you take out looks good, only a test with a meter will confirm its integrity. If fuse is ok then its an earth check next between the edge of the bulb holder to a clean chassis point. If ok, check the supply to the bulb holders centre pin.

Ps relays may be independant to each side too, don't know the cars electrical layout so need another member to confirm. Locate the tail light relay and touch the top of it with a finger, turn the lights on and you should feel and hear it click. Turn lights off again and it should click off.
