The rear right handbrake cable on my 2004 Multipla 1.9JTD snapped on Christmas Eve. It is the one with drum brakes at the rear. I have a replacement cable and know it is an easy job though not as easy as the disc model where the connection is visible! I have removed the blanking plug on the backplate and have disconnected the end of the cable at the lever but cannot remove the broken part out of the front of the backplate. Have tried a mole grip, WD40 and a hammer and old screwdriver but it wont budge. I haven’t yet turned to the blow torch and would prefer not to remove the drum!
I have 4 pics of the new and old cables and the backplate. There are splines on the end of the new cable which engage in the backplate.
Hope someone can advise

Not remove the drum..?

I would use a drill to weaken the stub...
Drill through the empty cable hole..
In 1mm steps..

It'll either twist out..or be weakned enough to drift though

Thanks
But my fear is that there will be no way to extract the bits - coupling, spring and cable bit as there is not much visible before I start

Normally...
Unlip the shoes set..to gain access to the 'nipple :nut'on the cable end..in the handbrake mechanism arm.
Uncouple then pass the cable forward.

ALL OF THIS REQUIRES DRUM REMOVAL

Thanks
Pity: I had hoped it was possible to feed the old cable out and then feed the new one through and hook it onto the lever as suggested on the Multipla Elearn CD

Hi
I have found a Word document saying how this may be done without the problems of removing the rear drum (caused by lipping) and having to retorque it to 280Nm

280Nm torque is for the hub, not the drum.
If your rear drums have lipping, then the sooner this is sorted the better, because it will only get worse and impede brake shoe replacement.
When my drums had some lipping, I managed to remove them, then ground the lip off (using a low-cost Dremmel-style tool).

Thanks Chr1S!
It is some time since I did the rear drum brakes on any of my cars - having rear discs is easier. I had removed the two location pins but with the constant rain I had a pause and a beer

I don't know yet if there is lipping but assumed that with the mileage being 98K there would be some and that the drum would be hard to remove without damaging the brake linings. I thought of removing the hub and grinding any lipping off before reassembly: it probably isn't possible as the rods and springs may prevent it. Will instead just try to remove the drum using two screws. I know how to adjust the handbrake after reassembly but how do you to relax adjust the shoes?

I’m not sure what your asking. But if your asking how to get the drum off and it’s lipped and preventing removal?
Then you need to butcher the retaining clips from behind the drum. These are the little clips that retain the shoes...there is a small spring and a clip inside the hub. Usually come with new shoes. With these out shoes will come off with drum.
