I've been sniffing about various Mutli's on the web and I kind of
assumed that mk2, if you like, diesel Multi's all had the multijet
engine. However it appears that original common rail JTD's were fitted
for a while. Can anyone tell me at what reg. they started fitting the
Multijets? I'm guessing 55 reg but it's an assumption. Or were both
fitted for a while?

Also can anyone tell me the difference between the two engines? My
dealer tells me that it's an entirely new engine but another source
says that it a reworking of the top end and the block is basically the
same. Is there a geeky website or something that can explain it to
me?

I assume multijet is a different method of injecting the fuel than
coomon rail, or do multijets use common rail technology?

Basically then, HELP!

You are correct they changed the engine in 2006 (55 plate) and both were available then according to parkers website:

http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/Version.aspx?model=231&plate=80&issue=0

Common-rail is great because it injects diesel fuel at very high pressure into the cylinder, ensuring a finer mist and more efficient burn. However, it's a bit on the noisy side, so a small, pilot injection of fuel is added before the main bang to increase the pressure and temperature in the cylinder and help silence the main explosion. That was true even of the Unijet.
However, with the Multijet, fuel is injected three times during each combustion cycle, and in different ways, depending on the throttle opening and the load being put on the engine. Sometimes there will be two small spurts of fuel, followed by a big one; sometimes a small one, then the big one, then another small one.

The goal, as ever, is improved efficiency and reduced emissions, and even without a particulate trap, the Multijet engine meets Euro 4 emissions regulations, which was inforced in 2006.

Hope this helps you

Cheers Gary. Sort of confirmed what I thought.

Test drove this 56 Eleganza today. 1 owner 9,500 miles, Sales managers own car. 17' alloys as well. And what a colour! And at £9995 I can afford it too.

But the problem is the colour. As I do a little chauffeuring with it I don't think the Mayor would be too pleased about being collected in what is essentially a giant orange!

However, the multijet pulls like a train through 100mph when aerodynamics take over a little and is both quieter and I suspect more economical than my 110 JTD. If only it were in black.......
