Hello,
My wife's 2001 Multi JTD has developed a problem where the engine cuts out randomly. No dashboard warning lights are activiated for this.
This first happened 2 days ago whilst cruising on a slight downhill at 40 mph when the engine just died. To be honest, I only noticed as soon as I did because the steering weighted up. It has happened again three times today under the following conditons:
2. Accelerating uphill out of a junction
3. Pulling in outside a shop (braking gently)
4. Whilst stationary and ticking over outside the shop
Each time, the car initially refuses to restart (as if the immobiliser has kicked in - turning over but not trying to fire) but after a few minutes, fires up again. After number 4, it refused to start to the extent that we walked the 3/4 of a mile home for my Marea and a towrope. When we returned to the car thus equipped, it started and we drove it home.
I have plugged it in to my home diagnostic system (fiatecuscan) which returned the following fault code:
'P0404 - EGR Device (5) - The reason for this fault code is that ECU did not receive signal from the sensor. The fault is present now. Take appropriate action to fix this sensor fault. The dashboard warning light was not activiated for this fault.'
QUESTIONS:
1. Could a stuck EGR valve cause the engine to cut out (the car has 100000 miles on the clock)?
2. Is the EGR sensor a different part from the EGR valve?
3. Could the EGR sensor be failing to send a signal because the valve is not operating?
I will remove and clean the EGR valve and the MAP sensor as a precaution anyway.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Ian
