Our Multi went in for it's cambelt and service today, all went well except they noted that the multi fan belt and tensioner are worn and noisey.

Is this anything to worry about? Is it easy to source and replace the above?

Thanks in advance

It's normal practice when replacing the cambelt to replace the water pump, auxilliary belt and tensioner at the same time. If the auxilliary belt breaks, bits of it can go into the cambelt and break it.

Do the auxilary belt and tensioner usually come with the cambelt kit or are they seperate items as it states on our receipt that a cambelt and pulley kit has been installed!?!?

Are the auxilary belt and tensioner easy enough to replace or do you have to strip it all out again? (cambelt etc)

The auxilliary belt and tensioner are not part of the cambelt kit.

You don't need to remove the cambelt to fit the auxilliary belt but your garage would have removed it to fit the cambelt kit. It would have been more sensible to fit it at the same time.

It doesn't say much for your garage if they let you drive the car away with a new cambelt when "they noted that the multi fan belt and tensioner are worn and noisey". Unless you were given the option of having it done but declined of course.

Dave.

The tensioner wheel is made of a plastic material moulded onto a bearing. When the bearing starts to fail it heats up and the plastic wheel can become distorted and throw the belt off.

This isn't a night time, side of the road in the pouring rain repair to get you home, so replace it before it happens!

If I remember correctly, the tensioner from FIAT was around £35, and apart from skinned knuckles was easy enough to fit.
