I'm assuming this will be a dirty looking can shaped thing like it is on the spi engines?
Nope. It's one of the "sock round the fuel pump" efforts.
Yes because its an absolute bitch to even get to never mind replace so might as well do the whole part
Did you swap the MAP in the end? Just thinking, it's so often the cause of hunting idle........
Im not on about 72K miles now and the filter has never been done![]()
When I asked my local dealer, they only do them when they become and issue, and are not part of regular service on the mpi.

Think I asked before but can't remember 100%, you done a compression test?
Kristian
Its easy peasy to do, adn the tool only costs about £20. I can tell you how if you fancy a go at it
Has it only done this since the gasket was done, or was it doing it before?
Kristian
Just thinking the symptoms you describe can be gasket related, and its probably worth a check. They can blow, can be fitted poorly, even if they have been done not to long ago.
You will need to buy the tool to test obviously, then its as simple as:
Remove plugs (all of them)
Rmove HT leads
disconnect the coil pack connectors (the two that go to each coil pack)
Unplug the injector connectors
Then you screw the tool into any of the spark holes
Press the accelerator pedal all the way down
Turn the car over via the key
The guauge will jump up, and should steady after a few seconds.
Make a note how long it took, and what the reading was, then repeat on all the other plug holes.
Any large variations and you have a problem....coolant/oil, coolant/cylinder, oil/cylinder, cylinder/cylinder.
Some give obcious symptoms (water in oil, loss of coolant etc), but they won't always give symptoms, thats what the compression test is for
