I'm assuming this will be a dirty looking can shaped thing like it is on the spi engines?

Yes because its an absolute bitch to even get to never mind replace so might as well do the whole part

Fair one...

Oddly I couldn't find the answers I wanted when using the forum search tool - but upon googling, it actually found me a thread that had all the answers, on Fiat Forum!

Needless to say, I discovered that the fuel filter has not been done at last service - but since the car is actually running again now (if with a somewhat severe Hunting Idle) since I swapped the TDC sensor (again), I think I'll leave this one well alone ;)

Did you swap the MAP in the end? Just thinking, it's so often the cause of hunting idle........

Yeah - I swapped it out for a scrappy one, but it's just the same.
Checked all the hose leading to it (sprayed a bit of water on it and checked visually - not sure if this is the best/correct way) - no obvious cracks - infact the piping looks pretty much new.
Ben (Steely) took a look for me the other night - and he's convinced it's the MAP (think he's got a spare, gonna try it next time I see him).
Any other bits you can think of that might cause rough juddery idle?
- Just incase you missed the trouble list before, So far changed:
*Plugs
*leads
*TDC sensor
*done diagnostic - no error codes

Im not on about 72K miles now and the filter has never been done :D ;)

When I asked my local dealer, they only do them when they become and issue, and are not part of regular service on the mpi.

Kristian

Yeah - spoke to a few people about it now who've said the same thing.

Think I asked before but can't remember 100%, you done a compression test?

Kristian

Yeah you did ask - Haven't done (don't know how) - but kinda assumed that since the car's been like this since I had the HG changed, that compression would be ok....

Its easy peasy to do, adn the tool only costs about £20. I can tell you how if you fancy a go at it :)

Has it only done this since the gasket was done, or was it doing it before?

Kristian

to be honest I can't really remember - Had the HG changed, and the head skimmed about a week after buying the car, and that was last july (how time flys!) - but I don't remember it being like this when I bought it - come to think of it the car felt more powerful from what I recall, certainly didn't struggle as much at motorway speeds... What you thinking?

I'm game for trying a compression test - I'm not 100% on the mechanics side of things though as you know - so it may take some explaining! :)

Just thinking the symptoms you describe can be gasket related, and its probably worth a check. They can blow, can be fitted poorly, even if they have been done not to long ago.

You will need to buy the tool to test obviously, then its as simple as:

Remove plugs (all of them)
Rmove HT leads
disconnect the coil pack connectors (the two that go to each coil pack)
Unplug the injector connectors

Then you screw the tool into any of the spark holes
Press the accelerator pedal all the way down
Turn the car over via the key

The guauge will jump up, and should steady after a few seconds.

Make a note how long it took, and what the reading was, then repeat on all the other plug holes.

Any large variations and you have a problem....coolant/oil, coolant/cylinder, oil/cylinder, cylinder/cylinder.

Some give obcious symptoms (water in oil, loss of coolant etc), but they won't always give symptoms, thats what the compression test is for :)

Thats the one i use. Can get them online, at the local factors or Halfords :)

Sounds simple enough (y)
Will take a look :)

Ive got a simmilar problem, although its on an SPI. Let me know how you get on so far I've done plugs and leads and was contemplating doing the filter, sensors and a compression test.
Cheers
