Im taking my Barchetta back home!

Has anyone moved from England to Italy with their Barchetta?

Mine is a UK spec 1996 Barchetta.

This is a permanent move to set up a new life in Italy so will need to register my Barchetta as Italian. Anyone been through this process and can advise on what is involved and how much it will cost??

I have just submitted a request for a Certificate of Conformity to Fiat Customer Care.

Any help would be appreciated.

How do I find a good car mechanic in Italy specifically Rome??

try an ex pat site for Italy as many move there each year and all info needed regarding registering your car ect ect is readily available on forums.

Sorry its my sense of humour but i do find the last bit funny "finding a decent mechanic for an Italian car in Italy/ Rome"...as i have always gotten good service in Italy wherever i have gone.

I was thinking of importing another car and spoke to my fantastic English speaking garage and got this from him a few weeks ago:

If the owner will remain the same, it's far more simple. Here is what you have to do...
To matriculate an English car in Italy, you need to demonstrate that the technical data of the car are compatible with the Italian laws. To do so, you need the "official data sheet" released by the producer of the car (for instance, they told me that Toyota asks about 380 Euro for the official data sheet of their veicles...)
You certainly need to change the lights and probably the odometer (if it has the indication in both km/h and mp/h you can leave it, if it's only mp/h you need to change it...).
You also need to give to the Motorizzazione the original English papers of the car.
Nothing else.
If the English MOT (revisione) is still valid, you don't need to do another one in Italy.
The cost of new papers, plates, etc. is more or less 680 Euro, and the agency can translate also the documents, because of course the italian Motorizzazione Civile wants everything in Italian...
So it will cost you more or less 1000 Euro.

I know a top mechanic in northern Italy he loves barchettas and knows all there is to know about them.

Ah, sweet memories. 35 years ago, as students, we used to go skiing every year in Valais (a friend's family had a time-share in Crans-Montana, so loads of us would head over there at every opportunity). One of the highlights of the holiday was a road-trip through the Simplon pass to Verbania for a meal at one of the lakeside restaurants (it was too expensive to eat out in Switzerland).

I'd love to take my B on a road-trip round those parts - maybe when I retire!!
 
Im moving to Roma!! I was made redundant at work.. decided what the heck I love Italy, I'm 28, recently single and need a change of life and an adventure.. !!

I have had two very bad experiences in England with so called italian car specialists and one of them was specifically a Barchetta specialist.. hence my reservation in finding a good mechanic!!

I guess a mechanic close to Roma would be a bonus!

I have applied for a codice fisicale (national insurance/tax number) and ive requested via Fiat Customer Services the Certificate of Conformity (im hoping its free!!!)

I dont have a job in Italy but I am working on it! If I need to move further north for work then so be it..

Any help with any of this would be appreciated.
 
I envy you. In 18 months I'm going back to the US and have more chance of being the first US King than getting my B into the states. I wish you well and hope all works out for you.
 
He is near parma,he's a very enthusiastic barchetta owner.are you near?If so I will mention you to him.
 
hey Jetweed what's the hurry? you don't need to do anything concerning the car just yet.
You can get insurance in the uk to cover you for a year,all you need is a MOT full that is.
I have read many on ex pats use this arrangement year in year out only cannot recall which site although there are numerous sites and i am sure they would be able to help you out and save yourself hassle and money.good luck with your move
 
You can get insurance for Expats through Stuart Collins (www.stuartcollins.com)(been using them for several years and really helpful and friendly with an AXA policy) and through Italsure, (they have been taken over by Clements and is web only and when I tried last month to get insurance I gave up as not as good as before :( ).

Get a new MOT and certainly good for a year. There is a lot of discussion on MOTs and the legality of not having one. The AXA policy from Stuart Collins asks you to be able to demonstrate roadworthyness.. However what the police would want if you had an accident is different. I now have all Italian cars to save driving back every year for an MOT. But a lot of people don't bother renewing it.
 
cannot believe you are taking my old b abroad! sorry you haven't had much luck with her, hopefully all your luck will be in italy and that you find everything you are looking for there. including a good mechanic!
 
Thanks HP! Thank you everyone for your advice and support.. Ill keep you posted on my "journey" to get to Italy.. Im waiting for a response as to what the next steps are from Fiat Customer Services for my Certificate of Conformity request.. When I phoned up to confirm receipt of my scanned V5 documents they did intimate it would possibly cost around €120.. so we'll wait to see what else is required.
