mot fail maybe?

Parked up my stilo the other day and went off to play my weekly footy kick about.......got back to my car to find someone had ran into the back of me.....my bumper was scratched up pretty bad and my left rear light has a fairly nasty crack, with a smallish piece of glass now missing. knocked on the door of the house next to where i had parked and the guy said he heard a bang and seen a "blue" car drive away from mine. I gots my MOT coming up in a couple of weeks so i just need to know if i need to get my light replaced quickly due to the crack or if it will be ok to pass the MOT in its current state. All lights etc work fine but i did not know if they might pull me up over it.
cheers.

I believe that you cannot have any white light showing through the coloured lens. That being the case then I'd say it will fail. You might also get pulled by the cops if you're unlucky and it's been a bad evening.

You could always buy some coloured tape to cover the hole, and if it fails don't you get a few days for a retest anyway.

I could be wrong, but that's how I've always understood it.

Re: mot fail maybe?

I think they also have to be waterproof, so if a crack allows water in then it will fail... (again, i might also be wrong)

Re: mot fail maybe?

yea my concern was water getting in. I will order myself a new light asap to be safe. cheers.

Re: mot fail maybe?

Ouch, thats a real bummer mate. What have the cops said? I trust you did call the rozzers? A new back bumper and headlight cluster is going to cost a few quid. So if you were going to claim it on your insurance you would need a Crime Ref Number. Plus you never know the coppers might do something about it.

Re: mot fail maybe?

i did not contact the cops nah...maybe a bad move but i felt there was prob little they could do....the guy who kinda witnessed it was a real old chap and he could not identify the make/model of car or get a look at the reg. Just annoying more than anything due to the bad timing with MOT round the corner! Im jus gonna sort the light for now then look into getting a shiny new bumper.

Re: mot fail maybe?

The MOT regulations regarding this say that there must be "A Steady Right Light Emission and the Cluster Unit must be safe and secure; if lens repair tape is fitted, it must be judged on its own individual merits."

So white light = failed, smashed so it's insecure = failed, otherwise it'll be ok.

Streaky - thats bad luck mate - hope their cambelt snaps! - gits - I really hate that - people who don't give a toss about other peoples motors.
I had some pratt scratch my 156 door in Tescos car-park when it was 2 weeks old?! Know how you feel..............

Mot

Just got my car MOTed and its the first time i've had one of the new fancy computorised ones. It passed which is great but my MOT centre doesn't do free retests anymore, so next time i'll have to take it somewhere else where they do don't want to have to fork out 45 quid everytime. bloody government.

Re: Mot

I think they're all like that now. Have to pay full whack for retests

Just had my Bravo done. 108k miles and passed without a hitch. What's that about Fiats again?

Weirdly the "computer" decides whether it passes or not. The brake efficiency data gets sent to some central "brain" (probably just an apprentice with a slide rule in the next room) and the "brain" decides whether it passes or not. Mechanics just standing around waiting for the verdict for 2 mins.
Buzz whirr whirr "Here's your pass certificate"

Re: Mot

Damn i guess its the end of "yes of course it passed;) " Slip £50.Well i guess ive got over 2years to find a reasonable garage:D

got free mots for life as part of the deal when i bought the car (glyn hopkins- chadwell heath). first one due in september and i bet anyone that they will find something to justify the "free" mot (probably wipers)

Re: Mot

the new MOTs are a god send i got failed last year with my stilo because the garage claimed by windscreen washers werent working, he wanted to charge me £98 to fix them till i informed him there was no fluid in :bang:

Re: Mot

Couple of points.

free re-tests were NEVER part of the MOT, this has always been a garage incentive. If a car failed on anything more than lights, then the full fee was payable. Clearly some garages waivered this second charge to get business.

No washer fluid is a MOT failure. This is why it is illegal to drive your car without fluid. If police stopped you, they base 'roadworthyness' on the points in the MOT.

For the price of wiper blades[there are some bood buys]I change them automaticaly every year before the MOT garages rip you of for their replacments (n)

Re: Mot

TBH why are you putting a new tyre in the boot? I don't understand why people carry round a brand new tyre on the spare and maybe never use it? When 2 tyres need changing I replace one with a new tyre, use the spare and put the best of the two used ones in the boot as the spare. Seems to make sense to me. Don't have to buy 2 tyres then, but i do match them.

Re: Mot

they said the washers were broken tho, didnt even bother to check for fluid

The new tyre has been in there since day dot and its a cruddy dunlop tyre so as soon as i get the other its going back in the boot
