Anyone had the experiance of getting your car through the new MOT procedure? It seems like a right money spinner now, increase in price for the test (avg £45) because it takes longer (45-60mins) and no free re-test if you fail. Its all being done through a computer database now so that its easier to check up on cars to see if they have a valid certificate. This means that the garage staff have to enter all information into the computer as they do the test dragging things out. Aswell as this its not all down to the technicians discretion as to what is legal and whats not, its now the computer that tells the technician this, so you will be lucky to find a lenient garage. My Bravo failed yesterday on several brake issues and not looking forward to sorting them out, then will have to fork out another £45 for a re-test. Nice and cheap!! I suppose its one way of getting old cars off the road.

local one to me is 40 quid and a free retest within 14 days if you fail

Thats because it must be one of the 10% of garages that have not gone over to the new regulations yet, once all garages have gone over it will be by law not to have free retests, unless you take it back within 24hours (highly unlikely)

"it will be by law not to have free retests, unless you take it back within 24hours (highly unlikely)"

Actually thats always been the case but most places offered the free retests anyway. Free retesting was only strictly available on a few items and only if the vehicle wasn't taken away. More than 24hrs and they had to re-do the emissions tests.

It isn't anything new, they are just really enforcing it now.

FIAT FOXFIELD IN WIGAN,charge £35 for mot. on the new computerised ones as well.
the mechanics there said that the new system is a pain in the rear too. takes up too much time

All i know is that around my area all garages used to give a free retest within 2 weeks of failure, so thats what im used to. I dont like this new enforced rule. I used to like getting the MOT done and finding out whats wrong with it, then taking the 2 weeks to get the bits sorted and then taking it back for free.

One bit of good news, the brake discs and pads ive now got to get for the rear ive found on bypartsbuy for cheap as chips.

You can still do that. Simply get the MOT done 2 weeks before your current one expires. If it fails your old one is still valid for the 2 weeks needed to fix the faults. :)

re

I've always thought free re-tests after more than 14 hours were a courtesy thign of the garage to get you to come back!

The MoT Station that I use charges £40 and retest with 14days is free. I was talking to the owner a while ago and he really dislikes the new system, seeing as it slows the place down and therefore loses him revenue.

I cant say I blame him either.

the computer will let you do an mot every 30 minutes thats the limit they have put on it, as in they can only do 1 mot every 30 minutes, i had mine done about 2 or 3 weeks ago and it was the new computerised one, they also said that if it didnt pass they would do me a free retest aslong as the work was done at there garage, so seems to me like its at there own desgretion if they give you the freebie or not( NOT that i needed it as my car passd n e ways lol

Although your MOT Certificate is valid for 12 months your vehicle could be classed as unroadworthy as soon as a fault develops.
If your vehicle fails an MOT before your previous certificate runs out, tough. You could be booked for driving an unroadworthy vehicle. Worse still - knowingly.

re

as above,
it was pointed out to me once that on he small print on the back of the mot it states the test is only for a certain point in time, and it is he owners responsibilty to make sure no changes effect it!
