Exhaust front pipe support bracket broken:

This is my first car and this was on the MOT already broken.
If anyone knows how what this means or how to fix it (in detail) as im a complete car newb please help me

welding means putting things together to make it un rattle able i dont have a welder can i use metal clamps or metal hose pipes (will this pass the MOT) i am yet to look under the car

Lay on your side in front of car in the middle & look underneath you will see the exhaust pipe going back under the engine there should be a L shaped bracket bolted to the gearbox housing & connected to that is the rusted front support bracket around the exhaust pipe. Now you can either remove the rusted bracket & forget it or get a suitable piece of galvanised steel from say Wickes & make a new one as I did.

My car passed M.O.T with a rusty broken bracket as the exhaust can't fall off as its bolted the engine so removing it totally will not lead to a failed test, I just replaced it for my own peace of mind.

I decided it was worth having this bracket on the car and spent about a day messing around getting it done using stuff that could be bolted together and had to be bent to fit on a large vice so it went together without stressing the exhaust.

Whats happening is the brackets that go around the exhaust are rotting off
This in turn causes it to rattle so mechanics and DIY's just take them off

There is just 1 problem with that
I've now had to have mine weleded up 3 times because of it....

What have i done to fix it?

Fitted a U shaped exhaust clamp - using 1 of the studs, make a bracket to attach back onto the original gearbox bracket

So far im hoping no more blowing....

Ziggy

thanks guys for all the help
i think because the mounts were made of loose rubber the exhaust pipe was allowed to vibrate up and down i reinforced the mountings with cheap metal clips and have eliminated all that rattling

So now you have transferred stress to the expensive exhaust manifold which will eventually break. The manifold should be held securely at the gearbox so as the engine wobbles around at startup or when going over bumbs etc it cannot bend the manifold, and then all the movement occurs via the flexi link and the rubber blocks.

okay hmm sounds like i might need to go under the bonnet again and see where the actual pieces are rattling against try cushioning the noise or unloosen the clips a little if the exhuast actually needs movement i never knew that

You do not seem to have understood what I have told you.

The exhaust should be fixed to the engine at the bracket that you told us was broken. It was suggested to you that you get a welder to fix that bracket.

The first part of the exhaust and the engine and gearbox should be moving as if they were a single piece of metal.

ye this what happen when i looked underneath the car There R 3 connections to the actual body of the main car. the first 2 were welded on these 2 must be connected to the engine and gearbox sections with the rubber mounts at the side (must be no problem here) and the last connection were at the back with only the rubber. this is the part that is moving anyway ill have another look underneath the car its hard cos outside i only have a parking meter so is hard for me to carry out repairs. ill let know how i got on
