Woohoo, it's been 18 interesting months with the SE X10. Plenty good months and the odd hiccup without knowledgeable use of the android operating system. Now here's the conundrum, do I stick with the devil I know and wait for the android 2.3 upgrade to arrive or switch to a new shiny phone for the next 18months. So far the contenders for switching are,

Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android) - 2 work colleagues have this now and not so keen to be a sheep
LG Optimus 3D (Android) - I originally thought this would be gimmicky, but it's awesome
HTC Sensation (Android)

Current SE phones are out as IMO they're no better processor wise than the X10 I've got. Dare I say it for all the Apple slating I do, hold out for the new dark side phone to arrive and consider it?

I know Gill is holding out for the new Apple and wants to look into having the tv/audio integration components so she can stream video, pictures and music direct to the tv and surround sound. This would then make sense to also have the apple product, but I a man and sense isn't what I'm about LOL

What do you think guys/gals, anyone else looking or have any comments?

Cheers,
Rich

I'm also looking and also stuck! And now flopping about waiting for something special (well, better than my current Nokia N8) to come my way. Have you had a fiddle with one of these new 3d ones then and what do you think? Really not sure on what benefit it would bring me as I don't use my phone for films/ gaming. HHHmmmmmm.

My HTC has been nothing but problems of late.

Camera/Flash stopped working, texts are a night mare to write (and even trying to open a text clicking one contact opens a completely random one!) Then theres the issue of battery life and its constant overheating.

Can't wait to change this thing tbh!

IP5 for me when it comes out. Well, in July when I can upgrade. Bar flashing the ROM on my HTC, I can't see a solution to (some of) it's problems. I like the interface and the hardware but it just wasn't thought out properly and feels like a Beta product to me. Honestly can't believe how many things were left off the reviews I read, all I noticed was battery life being a bit poor, which it is.

I believe the newer HTCs are a lot better in many ways, but I'm feeling kind of burnt in the same way the last few SE phones burnt me. Been using my 3G a month or so now and though it's slow and lacking support, I love it. Just wish it had the satnav and camera of the Desire though.

Hey Helz, nice to see you on here. Yes the t-mobile shop have one to play with, it's impressive and until I played with it, wouldn't have considered it as I though it was just a gimmick. I'm not much of a phone gamer or movies so tbh I think the novelty of the 3D will wear off quickly. It does also do everything in 2D too, so not all would be lost on the next upgrade. The other downside is the android upgrades are delayed due to LG having to adapt it to work with the 3D interface.

Martyn, I'm surprised you an Rob have had such troubles with the desires. My sister and boyfriend have them and they've never missed a beat.

Hopefully go to the t-mob or 02 shops and have a good play with them and see what I fancy. My other though was to just upgrade to the one which will net the highest amount on ebay an keep the X10. Ooh choices :/

Could've perhaps been lemon phones we got in terms of the crashes and such, but with me it's technical details like the updates for apps eating up all the phone space and having to delete apps to make way for example. Or how the widgets stop working if you transfer some apps over to the SD. Think I'll just put an "etc" in now

Basically, I think there are software issues that could be helped with a fresh firmware (HTC have 2.3 in the wings but it's been there for an age), my mate's done that and loves it. But it's just bugged me as predominantly when I was looking through reviews, the issues which are common to most Desires didn't crop up. Pondering if the Galaxy S would've been a better option, though I'd heard support from Samsung was pants.

the LG is rumoured to last less than a day and the Galaxy S2 can last 2/3 days according to the lad at work. HTC raises issues about the popularity and speed at which they bring out new models, as you suggest Rob they may be beta rather than finished articles.

Gill's 3G has been faultless tbf, slower than the X10 but everything works as it should. As it's a O2 jailbroken to run on t-mobile it's still on iOS3 and now many apps require iOS4 to run.

Galaxy S2 is a bit of a brick as well, very square and fractionally bigger than the x10

See that is one thing I miss from the Desire as well - the screen. It's a really nice one on there even if it's not the original AMOLED and though the resolution on the iPhone's not bad it's like more modern screens - you notice the difference more in how well defined everything is.

I think the Achilles heel of the Desire is it's onboard memory. HTC were taking the proverbial only putting 512mb on there with the way current apps and the like are used and also how the standard set up on the phone uses in terms of space. I think less than 200mb is available to the user from the get-go, which is gone insanely quickly.

Anyways though, enough of the ranting on my Desire...I think the IP4 could well be a good option but waiting would be best. The price will go to the floor when the IP5's announced (maybe even next month) and then released and though it won't be the latest, mine and your other half's 3Gs have proven they've got serious staying power even if they stop being supported by Apple after a few years - think mine was March of this year.

Think there's a review of the Sensation on the Gadget Show site and I still say that mobile review site I go to is an excellent resource (http://www.mobile-review.com/index-en.shtml) but also check out Amazon and other consumer sites and really gut the reviews, negative ones especially.

It's Gill's upgrade day today so we went into t-mobile to find out what the crack was, not well is the best way to describe it. The usual two lads we deal with weren't in but have met the lads that were in before. Were currently on the old t-mob employee friends & family scheme which they are trying to get rid of.

As Gill was keen on the ip4 they could offer her 24m F&F contract for £30pcm, but the next upgrade would be full price contract. Alternatively, if she converted to Android they could do a free Galaxy S2, Sensation, Optimus 3D etc for £15pcm but again would be on full price contract after that. We currently pay £22.50pcm so the saving is defo helping as long as the mins/text/data are sufficient. She's now trying to decide whether to go for the android, try it then if she doesn't like it ebay it an get an ip4 that way.

Although we came away to think about what Gill wanted to do, the computers have been down since wednesday so they couldn't process the upgrade even if we'd wanted it. Hopefully the lads I get on with are in next time an can give us a better deal, alternatively were now looking at possibly a new contract that could suit better.

Well, with o2, I ended up being indecisive and waited about 5 months after my upgrade date. Dunno how it works with T-Mobile, but o2 didn't have an issue with me doing that. Just mentioning that in case you's can hold out for a phone that's about to be released. Saying that, the IP5 when it does come out will probably be more than the IP4 but as said before, you's may get a better deal on the IP4 as a result.

I think so long as you's go over the Android offerings with a fine tooth comb, then one of those could be decent. Battery life, user allocated memory and any bugs that have cropped up need to be looked at with each. I'd also start a topic on that mobile review forum or the Android forums to get people's opinions on the options you've got as well.

I have to say, my contract is a marginal rip-off being £35pcm with the £5 500mb a month data included but I end up getting a better upgrade option at the end of it and it's an 18 month contract. Just wish I'd investigated the Desire a bit more but thankful I didn't get the WP7 I was tempted to go for, my mate's had one for as long as his Desire and can't stand it lol

Cheers Rob, aye there's no rush to upgrade, but you know how it is, why wait when you could have something now. As you say, the ip5 will be more expensive and the ip4 will come down in price. Having rooted about, looks like either the ip5 or ip4s will be out in October but as with the great marketing ploy of apple, ya can only believe it when it finally arrives.

The you lad in the shop has the Motorola Atrix, says it's a beast of a phone and a good all rounder. To make the most of it though the accessories are a bit pricey and not all available through TM but can be bought elsewhere.

More reading, playing etc an might make a final decision sometime lol

HTC Sensation.....Brilliant Phone....been running mine for a couple of months now, Camera Brill, Screen Awsome, battery life seems good, but i tend to run a lot of widgets. my mate has the I phone 4, he played with the HTC and really liked it, well worth a look at Tech Radar website, they have some great HTC vs I Phone comparisons, real in depth reviews. They really have got i right with the Sensation, none of the probs with the older Desires and wildfires.

I miss snake :( and I had pinball for a while on one of my phones. It kept me occupied for hours especially when stuck on a bus in Newcastle traffic.

Although occasionally I'd get funny looks for comments such as arse and bugger...

I was swaying toward the Sensation, when Gill put out a FB request for friends review, it came out worst with several owners and only one liking it. Many described the symptoms that Rob mentions above. As there Gill's friends I'll take there opinions with a pinch of salt. Glad your having a good experience with it and will look into the websites you and Rob have recommended.

I'm keeping an eye out for the right guys to do the upgrade, hopefully they'll steer us in the right direction. I've also looked up the comparison sites Martin Lewis recommends so hopefully armed to get the best deal, even if it means losing the F&F

Just to finalise the thread in a way, were going to the shop in the morning to collect a sensation and galaxy s2. The plan being I'll test drive both phones and keep the one I like, the other will be sold to pay for Gill's ip4 or ip5 dependant how soon she wants the new phone.

I'll maybe do an update of my opinion of the two phones, although as a side note, upgraded my x10 to 2.3 android today an it's awesome! really impressed how well the phone is working so who knows, it could be a keeper after all
