Hi all.

I have been thinking for ages on how to mount my mobile in the Multipla. I am not keen on the suction cup windscreen ones, as they look tacky and fall off every so often! And with there being no large plastic surface readily available on the dash, as there is fabric everywhere I couldn't see a way of permanently screwing or sticking one in place.

Then I was in Poundland...... In there they were selling front and rear bicycyle mudguards (for a quid, funnily enough....) that were attached to the frame by tube clamps. This gave me an idea.

I blew the budget and spent me quid. On returning home I stole the clamp bits, discarded the mudguards and after a quick trial fit of the clamps, rushed off to Asda (shameless advertising on this forum, you know...) and bought a cheap mbile phone holder for £6.00 (I know, money to burn....).

I then screwed the mobile phone holder onto the clamps and mounted the whole affair on the drivers front door handle. Within easy reach (Myrtle has a bluetooth kit built in) and secure, permanent yet easily removable if necessary. It works well. I'm pleased with it anyway. Couldn't photograph the phone in the holder as I was using it to take the pics! Pics attached below. What do you think?

Mine used to be on a sucker thing attached to the wee window in the door. I was always uncomfortable about how easily nickable it was with the window open while stationary and the potential consequences of it falling out of the holder when the door was opened.

It now lives on the left in front of the steering wheel - you can safely put a self-tapper through the dash to secure a phone holder there. It's also clearly seen if you need it for a satnav as well.

Can you post a piccy of your mounting fella? Keen to see what else is available.

Cheers, Panda.

Now this is just my own opinion, but I think it should be illegal to have a phone anywhere within reach of the driver.
And please don't mention hands-free, that's no safer than holding a phone to your ear while driving, as I believe several studies have shown.

Fair point. But it isn't yet illegal to have a phone in reach of a driver. And it's also my sat nav. And I will mention hands free as it isn't as yet illegal either and indeed Myrtle has a built in hands free kit. Also I am a chauffeur so I spend an awful lot of time parked up, waiting and talking to the office on the phone, making notes etc. and that is when the hands free is ideal, for me anyhow. However your opinion is of course as valid as anyone elses and I do take your point. Thankyou for your comments.

I realise it's not illegal, I just said I think it should be.
How many years did it take for there be a specific law brought in banning hand-held calls, 15+ ?

Of course there's no problem using a phone in any way when stationary.
There's only one reason however, to have a phone mounted on the dash (or similar), and that's for it to be used while driving.
I think Sat-Navs are a bad idea as well, particularly when the users mount them right in front of their faces on the windscreen :bang:

If a phone is only used when stationary, it really doesn't need to be out on display, it can be kept wherever it would be when the driver is not in the car.
You may well be 'disciplined' enough not to use it whilst driving, but in my experience (33+ years), I'd estimate approx 95% of drivers aren't.

I'm sure any other Bike riders will back me up on this point, you see many, many more other drivers and their dangerous habits 'close-up' on a Bike journey, than you do in a car. ;)

Yep. We've both obviously got opinions on this one that probably differ. Nough said.

Here's a couple of pics showing where the phone holder's located. I've held the camera as close as possible to where my eye level is, though of course this would vary dependent on seat/steering wheel positions and your own height. Works well for me though.

The holder is the phone-specific fitting from the sucker thing.

Also a pic for bikedoc. Bike satnav. What's the problem?:D
